Pleasant Bay Community Boating
Pleasant Bay Community Boating’s (PBCB) mission is to make boating, marine education, and environmental stewardship affordable and accessible to all. They are dedicated to serving all members of the community including those with physical, developmental and cognitive disabilities, as well as under-served families and at-risk youth. PBCB offers youth and adult sailing, adaptive programming, boat rentals and paddling opportunities.
In 2016, PBCB piloted Reach classes during summer programming and served 50 students through six classes. They integrate REACH modules into our creek and Bay exploration marine education program. Their 2017 goal is to enroll 150 students into their Reach programming, which will include 8 – 10 REACH educational modules (modified for our program) through 16 REACH classes over 8 weeks.
They envision realizing their mission-based goal of engaging local children in sailing and science today, and seeing them remain engaged as science-literate sailors throughout their lifetimes.
Community Partnerships:
PBCB has enjoyed a long partnership with Monomoy Community Services (MCS), the local non-profit that provides social services, childcare and recreational activities for local children.
PBCB has also partnered with the Town of Chatham for several years. The Town donates much-needed equipment and sends local children to PBPB for activities and programs.
Herreshoff Marine Museum
The Herreshoff Marine Museum/America’s Cup Hall of Fame is dedicated to the education and inspiration of the public through presentations of the history and innovative work of the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company and the America’s Cup competition. The Museum is one of the nation’s most important historic maritime treasures. They regularly host classic yacht regattas, sponsor symposia on classic yacht design and restoration, and operate an outstanding sailing school for youth and adults. They celebrate excellence in design, innovation, education, and technology.
In 2016 they provided Reach STEM instruction to approximately 150 students at the museum in single day and multi day programs. This year they anticipate serving over 200 youth participating in Reach Programing at the Museum. They also plan on hosting a Reach “Sailing through STEM” event this summer in combination with NBYA and Zim Sailing.
Community Partners
- Highlander Charter School – Completed 3, 8 session Reach programs for this school totaling 30 participants over the last 14 months
- Westport High School – 2017 Reach Field trip 12 participants participated in module 2 at the museum this spring and toured the Hall of boats and Model room to better understand the concepts of buoyancy.
- Bristol Warren COZ – currently participating in a 4 session Reach Sailing program this spring.
Rochester Sailing & Boating Foundation (Rochester Yacht Club)
RSBF in partnership with Rochester Yacht club started implementing Reach 3 years ago, during summer camps with local schools. Currently, they and work with Rochester city schools to bring sailing the inner city middle school during their science classes. They are eager to promote sailing to the greater Rochester community through summer programming and year-round school science programming.
In 2017 their goal is to support 50-75 students through a STEM and sailing program.
Partnerships – summer camps, Junior Olympics, middle school field trips, middle school science classes.
Sail Sand Point
Sail Sand Point’s (SSP) mission is to bring the joy and life-enhancing benefits of sailing and small boats to people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. Since their incorporation in 1998, Sail Sand Point has grown by leaps and bounds, transforming from a small neighborhood program into a flourishing boating community that serves people from around King County. Beyond providing learn-to-sail camps and classes, race team coaching and boat storage, Sail Sand Point also has a robust outreach program in place, awards thousands of dollars in program scholarships, and is wholly immersed in building out a comprehensive STEM curriculum to incorporate into all their youth camps and classes, as well as developing their adaptive sailing program, where a boater with a physical disability can come sail or paddle any day of the week.
In 2016, SSP served over 1500 youth. This year they have developed standalone “STEM” camps that have all the modules built into the weekly lesson plan.
Their partners include: Outdoors for All, YMCAs, Boys and Girls Clubs, Community Centers, Washington Autism Alliance, Mockingbird Society, Pinnacle Explorations School, NOAA Science Camp, Waldorf School and Seattle Pacific University.
Lake Minnetonka Sailing School
Located in Minnesota, Lake Minnetonka Sailing School offers recreational summer sailing programs and race training programs. They host a number of competitive youth regattas, high school sailing teams, and partner with local non-profits to offer sailing program for the community.
Currently they serve 700 students in their summer ‘learn to sail’ and ‘racing’ sailing programs and incorporate Reach/STEM into classroom discussions during no-wind and foul weather days. This year they expect close to 50 students to directly participate in their Reach/STEM classes in their summer programming.
With the inquiry-based learning, engineering by design process and hands-on integrated learning opportunities, they expect their new Reach programming to expand into the fall, partnering with local schools.
Park City Sailing Association
Founded in 2008, Park City Sailing works to provide sailing opportunities to the greater Park City community. With programs for kids through adults for learn-to-sail and racing, PC Sailing has been growing every year. In 2016, they served 1496 participants. Of that number, 642 were children that attended either from our sailing camps, providing sailing for local summer camps, local after school programs and special need children. With a fleet of 42 club owned boats and much of the work being done by volunteers, their resources are spread over a broad area.
This year, they are holding two STEM & Sailing camps focusing on the Reach curriculum. In addition, STEM “Light” will be incorporated within all 9 weeks of their junior sailing program. Both programs will expose 350 students to STEM using the platform of sailing.
Kauai Sailing Association
Kauai Sailing Association’s (KSA) mission is teaching like skills through marine awareness. KSA is known for developing life skills that include teamwork, leadership, self-confidence, self-awareness and integrity. They provide workshops and training camps on Marine Biology, Ecology, Sailing Instruction, Physics of Sailing (co-taught by Kaua’i Community College), and Marine Safety Programs. KSA also provides many of these co-curricular and curriculum aligned lectures at local schools. Youth sailing and Adult Sailing programs are also offered at KSA, including junior leadership training.
KSA provides these services in order to foster island spirit and an appreciation for our ocean’s nature. In 2017 they expect to serve 70 students through their Reach programming.

Charleston Community Sailing
Charleston Community Sailing Inc.’s purpose is to engage the lives of children and adults, ages 5 and older in unique learning experiences through innovative programs to build character and promote a healthy spirit, mind and body. Our programs stabilize youth and help them realize their hidden talents while conquering their fears and doubts, by using sailing as a vehicle. The mission of Charleston Community Sailing is to provide access, facilities and sailing instruction to anyone, regardless of socioeconomic background, skill level or physical ability.
They use Reach modules in many of their programs including STEM specific classes in our afterschool programs, summer sailing programs and Girls on the Water. In 2015, they first integrated Reach into their programming and this year expect to serve 200 students participating in Reach modules through community partnerships, summer sailing and afterschool programs.
Community Partners
Currently CCS partners with 10 area schools to provide facilities for school sailing, many of those students do not want to be competitive and Reach education has been a great fit. They also partner with area non-profits, most recently Chucktown Squash to provide afterschool opportunities.
Thanks to the support of 11th Hour Racing & US Sailing Donors, grants have been awarded to 19 sailing centers.
