US Sailing Team

US Sailing Team (Olympic Classes)

To qualify for the US Sailing Team, athletes/teams must meet the posted requirements while training and competing in a 2028 Olympic class. Athletes/teams will qualify for a specific Tier, with corresponding levels of US Sailing Team-provided support. USST Selection Procedures are reviewed annually.

The 2025 US Sailing Team Selection Procedures were published on November 4, 2024.

US Sailing Olympic Development Program (ODP)

 US Sailing Olympic Development Program (Olympic Classes)

US Sailing’s Olympic Development Program (ODP) is composed of athletes competing in Olympic equipment who are working to make the top 20 in the world to qualify for the US Sailing Team. 

To qualify for ODP, athletes/teams must meet the selection requirements while training and competing in a 2028 Olympic class boat. Athletes/teams will qualify for a specific Tier (Tier 3, 4, or 5) with corresponding levels of US Sailing-provided support.     

The US Sailing Olympic Development Selection Procedures were published on December 12, 2024 and amended on 12/19/24, 12/23/24, and 1/30/25.

2025 Junior Pan American Games

The 2025 Junior Pan American Games will take place in Asunción, Paraguay from August 9-23, 2025. The sailing events will take place in Encarnación, Paraguay.

Athletes must meet the age requirements as determined by the Pan American Sport Confederation: be at least 17 years old and not more than 22 years old in the year of the Pan American Junior Games (year of birth 2003 - 2008, inclusive).

The Athlete Selection Procedures for the 2025 Junior Pan American Games were published on January 27, 2025.

Olympic Class Events

ILCA Worlds

The majority of qualification spots for the ILCA Worlds are based on a qualification system published annually by the ILCA-North America Class, found HERE.

By agreement with the ILCA class, US Sailing is allocated one berth at each of the following annual World Championships:

  • ILCA 7 Men's Worlds
  • ILCA 6 Women's Worlds
  • ILCA 7 Men's Under-21 Worlds
  • ILCA 6 Women's Under-21 Worlds
The International Selection Committee will use its discretion based on performance at national and international events to select the athlete for these discretionary berths, including the following criteria:
  • Physical
    • Possesses appropriate fitness and strength as evidenced by performance in national and international regattas.
    • Has the appropriate physical size, including competitive height and weight.
  • Technical Proficiency
    • Handling and trim techniques (tacking, gybing, sail trim, starting line acceleration and balance), as well as race situations and tactics, as evidenced by performances in national and international regattas. Experience in a wide range of wind/wave conditions.

Youth Classes - US Youth Team

US Sailing Youth Worlds Team

Each year, US Sailing selects one eligible prospective athlete in each of the single‐handed classes and one team of two eligible prospective athletes for each of the double‐handed classes to represent their country at the Youth Sailing World Championships.

The 2024 Youth Sailing World Championships will be held in Vilamoura, Portugal from December 12-20, 2025.

US Sailing Youth National Team

The US Sailing Youth National Team is composed of the top American youth athletes, under age 19, in the Youth Worlds Classes (iQFOiL, Formula Kite, ILCA 6, Nacra 15, 29er, i420). Up to 72 athletes are named to the team annually, with selection procedures updated and revised on an annual basis.

Code of Conduct

In order to participate in a program or event of US Sailing and the US Olympic Sailing Program, including but not limited to membership on the US Sailing Team, participation in the Olympic Development Program, or competing at any international or domestic event for which US Sailing selects athletes to compete or participate, athletes pledge to uphold US Olympic Sailing Program Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct was published on June 28, 2022.
