We are excited to support the Sailors for Science Initiative from OpenROV aimed to connect the gap between scientists who need help collecting data and able crew, who want to contribute to ongoing scientific research.

The Initiative will provide participating expeditions with an OpenROV Trident (yes, a real ROV $1200 value) to help sailing centers gather videos and document their work, as well as share their work with the sailing & ROV communities through the OpenExplorer community. Expeditions submitted from Reach programs should focus on the problem of marine debris, local ecosystem sustainability, and include a connection to sailing. Sailing Centers can submit their OpenExplorer Expedition proposals to OpenROV – Sailing for Science Application

Because of our passion for our water and our endless need for exploration as sailors, we also find ourselves in hard to reach places and a regular basis that could be hard for the scientific community to reach. This gives us the unique opportunity to connect the sport we love, to science and research connected to solving problems that will keep our waters thriving for generations to come.

OpenROV is an Education Partner of US Sailing’s Reach Initiative. Through their support we are able to extend this opportunity to nine sailing centers running Reach programming in 2017. We look forward to following your expeditions and be sure to follow the 2017 US Sailing Reach Expedition. Find out more here: link needed. Please note all grant funded Trident ROVs are expected to ship in late August/September 2017. Please allow for this in your expedition plan. Find out more.

Tall Ships America

Tall-Ships

US Sailing and Tall Ships America work together to engage youth in STEM and sailing through outreach at the Tall Ships Challenge events. We also work to connect youth with a variety of enriching sailing experiences.

In 2017, US Sailing will be on hand to connect the public to local sailing programs in Boston and Charleston with the Tall Ships community.

US Sailing’s Reach Initiative is an “Educational Partner” of the America’s Cup Endeavour Program. The AC Endeavour Program launched in 2015 in Bermuda, the host venue for the 2017 America’s Cup to enable every student between the ages of 9 and 12 years old the opportunity to experience an interactive Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) curriculum through sailing.

AC Endeavour Program

Endeavour-300x300

The Reach Initiative has worked with the AC Endeavour Program providing teacher training to school teachers and sailing instructors in Bermuda through US Sailing’s Reach Educator Course.

The Reach curriculum has helped develop the AC Endeavour STEAM curriculum that leverages the innovating design and cutting edge technology at the heart of the America’s Cup to provide a hand-on and experiential learning environment for teachers and students.

US Sailing is proud to support the AC Endeavour Program as they focus on leaving a sporting legacy in Bermuda through community sailing and STEAM Education.
