SafeSport Explained

As the winter rolls around, it’s a great time to brush up on your SafeSport training! SafeSport training is a free online course that provides education on:

  • Sexual Misconduct Awareness
  • Emotional and Physical Misconduct
  • Mandatory Reporting (Understanding Your Responsibilities)

Following initial Core training, members can take an annual refresher training that will include new topics.

Who should take SafeSport?

US Sailing requires adult members and volunteers who it authorizes, appoints, or approves to have regular contact with or authority over minor sailing participants to take annual SafeSport Training. In addition, in accordance with the Center’s Education and Training Policy, US Sailing requires annual SafeSport Training for adults who are approved by Local Affiliated Organizations to have regular contact with or authority over minor sailing participants.

Those individuals required to complete SafeSport Training must take the full “SafeSport Trained” course once every four years and a “Refresher” course in each of the intervening years. Once you complete the online course, your SafeSport Training will be logged in your membership record in the US Sailing database.

This includes:

  • US Sailing certified Race Officials
  • US Sailing certified instructors
  • Local Affiliated Organization Board members, staff, and volunteers how have regular contact with or authority of minor sailors

The initial training (SafeSport Trained – NGB1) is a 90-minute online course, and is FREE for members of US Sailing if they register through the US Sailing Portal: https://ussailing.org/athlete-safety/#4

About the U.S. Center for SafeSport

The Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act of 2017 codified the U.S. Center for SafeSport, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, as the nation’s safe sport organization. It gives the organization the scope and authority to resolve abuse and misconduct reports for more than 11 million individuals throughout the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movement.

The Act also charged the organization with developing and enforcing policies, procedures, and training to prevent abuse and misconduct. The Center’s SafeSport Code governs all participants in the Movement, and their oversight authority helps ensure all Olympic & Paralympic national governing bodies (NGBs) adhere to Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policies (MAAPP) that support athlete safety.
