Since its establishment in 2012, the US Sailing Reach Program has opened doors for students across the nation to engage with science, technology, engineering, math (STEM), and environmental studies—all through the power of sailing. Far beyond the traditional goals of building skill and knowledge on the water, US Sailing’s Reach Program is about fostering a generation of young people who are both knowledgeable in STEM and deeply committed to environmental responsibility. With an emphasis on accessibility and growth, the Reach Program has become an invaluable resource for community sailing centers across the United States.
Inspiring the Next Generation Through Real-World STEM and Environmental Stewardship
US Sailing’s Reach Program targets middle schoolers at a pivotal stage in their academic development, aiming to spark curiosity and cultivate skills that can lead to careers in STEM fields. This unique program uses the framework of sailing to bring STEM concepts to life using a hands-on approach and focusing on authentic learning experiences. Students engage with the Reach Curriculum through Modules that range from understanding physics through wind and sail power, to environmental science lessons involving water quality testing and local ecosystem studies.
The Reach Program’s Modules include activities that are tailored, not only to build interest in STEM fields, but also to encourage students to think about their individual role as environmental stewards. By the end of each Module, students have a richer understanding of sustainability, a broader appreciation for their natural surroundings, and practical skills that can be applied to future challenges—both in and beyond STEM and environmental sciences careers.
Building Community and Opportunity Through Grants and Resources
Each year, the Reach Program awards ten grants of $3,500 each to community sailing centers across the country. The selection process is purposefully designed to ensure regional, program size, and participant diversity. These grants help ensure that community sailing centers can continue to provide engaging, high-quality STEM and environmental education programs and events to its students who might not otherwise have access to these unique opportunities.

Reach Grantees are not required to be US Sailing Accredited Community Sailing Centers, making this funding accessible to a wide variety of community-based programs. However, they are expected to set clear growth goals for student engagement, which helps centers build retention and sustainability into their programming. Through this grant initiative, the Reach Program amplifies the impact of community sailing centers across the country, enabling them to engage students in unique educational experiences and cultivate a love for both the sport of sailing and the environment.
Educational Courses, Publications, and Events for Educators
The Reach Program does not just focus on engaging students—it also provides valuable resources to educators through the STEM Educator Online Course. This 10-day online course gives instructors, volunteers, and educators the skills and tools they need to integrate STEM learning into their sailing programs effectively. In addition to coursework, there are three Reach Program publications available for purchase that include a robust curriculum of 17 unique modules with lesson plans, materials lists, activities, and career connections to STEM and environmental science topics. The Reach Program also has two easy-to-follow resources: 1) STEM Event Tool Kit on how to make a first connection in the community through STEM events; and 2) a Sustainability Guide for Sailing Centers for administrators, educators, and youth to further embed environmental best practices for continuous learning and growth.
Lasting Impact: The US Sailing Legacy
Over the past decade, the Reach Program has demonstrated that sailing is more than just a sport—it’s a powerful tool for teaching young people to engage with the world around them. Through real-world STEM applications and hands-on environmental learning, students leave the Reach Program with newfound knowledge and a strong sense of stewardship for the environment.
In an era where STEM skills and environmental awareness are more important than ever, the Reach Program’s continued expansion and commitment to accessible, quality education are inspiring. By supporting and investing in the next generation of sailors, scientists, and community leaders, the Reach Program is helping shape a future where youth are prepared and motivated to create positive change.
