Ahead: Largest Princess Sofía Regatta in History

Almost 1,000 boats and just under 1,300 athletes from 67 countries will take to the water from April 3-8 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, for the highest attended Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca Regatta in its 52-year history. Eighteen US Sailing Team athletes and twenty-three additional USA representatives across all 10 Olympic classes are making their final preparations on the shores of the Bay of Palma.

For our last #womenshistorymonth spotlight, we're catching up with Janel Zarkowsky, a Siebel Sailors Program Coach for US Sailing, as well as a certified instructor, a sailing coach at Georgetown University, and professional match racer.

Additionally, Zarkowsky is a classically trained cellist with a bachelor’s degree in music performance and a master’s degree in nonprofit management, both from Boston University; as well as a master’s degree in project management from Georgetown University. Zarkowsky is also a member of US Sailing’s Match Racing Committee and the U.S. Match Racing Championships Committee.

Six qualifiers will be held across the country this spring:

⭐️ May 20-21, 2023 - Bayview YC - Detroit, MI
⭐️ June 3-4, 2023 - San Diego YC - San Diego, CA
⭐️ June 3-4, 2023 - St. Francis YC - San Francisco, CA
⭐️ June 24-25, 2023 - Chicago YC - Chicago, IL

This #Womenshistorymonth, consider becoming a Judge with our women’s-only Online Club Judge Seminar! The seminar is taught by women, for women. Experienced instructors Mary Pierce, (RAJ Area A, NJ) Edith Collins, (RAJ Area D, NJ, CRO, UIT) and Sarah Ashton (NJ, former chair of Judges Committee) will teach you all you need to know about becoming a judge for sailing competition. Want to get back into teaching sailing? Take your Level 1 course with the azsailing this spring ⛵️

US Sailing, in conjunction with the Arizona Sailing Foundation, will cover the registration fees for anyone whose Level 1 has been expired for more than 10 years and is interested in attending the in-person Level 1 course section at the Arizona Sailing Foundation (ASF) April 28-30, 2023. US Sailing will waive the fee for the online course section and Teaching and Coaching Fundamentals Online ($135 total value), and the Arizona Sailing Foundation has kindly agreed to cover the cost for three people to attend the in-person course section ($300 value). There are still spaces in the course for community members to take advantage of this awesome offer.

For #womenshistorymonth, US Sailing is checking in with 2022 Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year Nominee Sara Stone. Stone, who originally hails from Marion, MA, got her start sailing cruising with her parents on Buzzards Bay and attending summer sailing camps. After a full scholastic and collegiate rowing career – where she was recruited to row for Dartmouth College – Stone reconnected with the sport, becoming a prolific offshore and keelboat sailor. Her 2022 Rolex nomination included successes in the TP52 circuit and in doublehanded offshore racing.

Registration is OPEN for the 2023 US Sailing Youth Championship presented by SouthCoast Wind! Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, US Sailing’s pinnacle youth regatta will feature the top sailors and the most challenging performance boat classes.

This year's Youth Champs will take place June 26-30 on the Roger Williams University campus in Bristol, RI. Regular entry registration closes on April 30, and late entry closes on May 15. For the first time in history, the 2023 Youth Champs will be an open event, with no application or invitation process required to be eligible.

289 nautical miles. 12 hours. Scream reaching at 23 knots aboard a “three hulled rocket ship,” designed for speed over comfort, crossing the finish line in the dead of night.

It was under these conditions that James Cyigenza became the first African American to help set a World Sailing Speed Record. From escaping the Rwandan genocide to setting sailing speed records, the 40-year-old has come a long way since immigrating to the US.

📣 Applications are open for the 2023 Reach Grants 📣

The Reach Program utilizes sailing as an educational platform, challenging youth to embrace education, establish a love of learning and explore productive Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) based careers. Combining educators, sailing instructors, engineers, scientists with today’s youth to provide them with a one of a kind authentic learning experience, giving students the opportunity to apply classroom learning in a cooperative work environment. Grants help provide financial support for program materials, transportation, and offset costs when implementing the Reach Initiative.

Renae and Rhonda Mintz are serial entrepreneurs, professors, IT professionals, a project manager, NASM certified personal trainers, and mechanical design engineers with a proven track record of developing business solutions for Fortune 500, mid-size, and start-up organizations and instruction of the future generations. They are expert problem solvers and change agents whose have seen many successes and challenges, both personally and professionally. Both Renae and Rhonda are active sailors who are involved in US Sailing’s DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) Committee.
