Inspired by efforts to make Safety at Sea training and certification more interactive and accessible, US Sailing has partnered with The Storm Trysail Club (STC) to offer a Safety at Sea Seminar featuring hands-on practice with new interactive online learning modules and videos. The seminar will take place April 18, 2015 at SUNY Maritime College in The Bronx, N.Y. The interactive online learning component of the seminar is part of a pilot program that will serve as a foundation for future online Safety at Sea online education offerings.
This seminar will cover the topics required to earn ISAF certification. With four ocean races being conducted on the East Coast this spring and early summer, a large turnout for the seminar is expected. Participants do not have to be ocean racers to attend a Safety at Sea Seminar. All boaters are welcome.
This seminar is ideal for crew members participating in international races or where ISAF certification is required, long distance cruisers, and any sailor wanting to find out how life jackets and life rafts work in a safe environment.
Rich Du Moulin, Past Storm Trysail Commodore, will serve as moderator. The hands-on subjects will include firefighting, damage control, man-overboard rescue, life raft deployment and use, and emergency pyrotechnics.
A test on all the subject matter covered will be administered at the end of the day.
Attendees will each be provided with a free copy of The Art of Seamanship, a new compendium on the subject of seamanship authored by STC member Ralph Naranjo.
The Storm Trysail Club has played a significant role in the evolution and presentation of Safety at Sea training materials and best practice procedures.

US Sailing Safety at Sea Seminar Facts
These seminars are moderated and taught by experienced, lifelong sailors who include some of the top names in sailing and safety. They are designed for sailors of all types and levels — cruisers and racers, novices and experts. The training is appropriate for a wide range of boats — small, big, monohulls, multihulls (and powerboats) — that are sailed anywhere — near shore and offshore. Curriculum is certified by US Sailing, with special attention to conditions and challenges of the host organization’s sailing area. More than 1,000 sailors attend safety seminars around North America every year and many bring their families and crews. The certifications are valid for five years.
