The second half of the San Pedro Olympic Class Regatta got underway August 3 as some of the world’s fastest Olympic sailing classes launch from the beach at the future home of the LA 2028 Olympics. In this second week of racing, another 140 competitors from 20 countries will compete, including 27 Olympians. Among them are the 7 Olympic medal winners of 1 gold, 5 silver, and 1 bronze, who will spend the week racing in the Port of Los Angeles gathering critical knowledge of the Olympic venue less than 2 years before the Games.
This event closes out the final US stop Grand Slam Series, following the Long Beach OCR July 13-16 and the first San Pedro OCR July 19-24.
While podium finishes remain the goal of this week’s racing, many sailors say that, like their fellow racers in the ILCA and 470 classes, one of the ancillary objectives is to walk away with as much information as possible on the future Olympic race area.
The US’ largest contingent this week comes in the 49er class, where the energy from Hans Henken and Ian Barrow’s bronze medal in Paris has helped inspire an active training cohort on domestic soil.
The top US 49er teams have been trading podiums at this year’s Sailing Grand Slam events. Nevin Snow / Ian MacDiarmid claimed second at the Princessa Sofia and third at Kieler Woche, while Andrew Mollerus / Trevor Bornarth took second at Dutch Water Week. It’s sure to be a tight battle at the top for these two American teams.
