Tabor Academy is Bringing Foiling to The Singlehanded Champs

To veterans of the U.S. Singlehanded Championship, the 2025 edition might look a little different – rather than hiking through the waves, sailors will be flying above them.

Hosted by Tabor Academy from June 20-22, this year’s U.S. Singlehanded Championship will be held in the WASZP, a foiling one-design dinghy. The choice to try something new (this will be the first time the championship will be held in a foiling boat) came from the U.S. Singlehanded Championship Committee, who wanted to bring a new generation into this historic championship, which was first held in 1962. It also serves to introduce other singlehanded sailors to this growing class and discipline. To facilitate this, a limited number of charters will be available from WeCANFoil, allowing those without a boat to get in on the action.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to see the WASZP foiling dinghy selected for the 2025 U.S. Sailing Singlehanded Championships at Tabor Academy. This is a huge milestone for our class and a powerful signal that high-performance foiling is no longer just the future—it’s here now and the WASZP is accessible to more sailors than ever before. Bringing the next generation of top sailors together on equal, one-design equipment at a venue like Tabor is exactly what the WASZP was built for,” said Zaak Beekman, U.S. Class President of the WASZP. “The opportunity to race for prestigious honors like the George D. O’Day Trophy, the Helen Hanley Trophy, and the Peter J. Barrett Sportsmanship Award will no doubt elevate the competition and the experience. We can’t wait to showcase the speed, skill, and excitement that only the WASZP can deliver.”

During the event, there will be a Green Fleet Coach provided at no cost to sailors to make sure the newest dinghy foilers feel supported and are able to get the most out of their foiling experience.

Event host Tabor Academy is a private high school in Marion, MA, with a historically strong sailing program producing multiple national and world champions. Calling itself “The School by the Sea,” sailing and access to the water is an integral part of the school’s mission. The school maintains and sails a 92-foot, gaff-rigged, two-masted schooner called the SSV Tabor Boy, aboard which students learn leadership lessons as they take real responsibility for the safety of the crew, passengers, and the vessel.

Tabor’s location on Buzzards Bay – where consistent sea breeze brings 15-20 knots from the ocean every summer afternoon – makes it a perfect location for a championship of this caliber, especially in a foiling class. Tabor Academy Waterfront Director, Andy Cornah, was inspired to host in part to bring Buzzard’s Bay back to the forefront as a small-boat racing venue.

“We recognize Buzzards Bay is a fantastic sailing location that has fallen off the map a little in recent times,” said Cornah. “We hope that competitors will enjoy sailing at a venue that provides such great conditions and hopefully a good experience for all!”

Alongside great conditions on the water, competitors will also have the ability to reserve housing on site for an affordable price. Rooms in the Tabor Academy dorms (with a dorm room and shared bathroom) will be available for $95 per night. Sailors can reserve a room during the entry process or though the school’s link.
