Sailing World Cup Hyères: USA Sonar Takes Lead Into Final Paralympic Day (Saturday)

Hyères, France – The US Sailing Team Sperry Sonar Team of Rick Doerr (Clifton, N.J.), Brad Kendell (Tampa, Fla.) and Hugh Freund (South Freeport, Maine) moved to the top of the leaderboard on the third day of racing at Sailing World Cup Hyères (April 27 – May 1).  The trio earned selection to the Rio 2016 U.S. Paralympic Sailing Team on Wednesday, and hopes to celebrate the milestone by earning a medal in Hyères against many of the best teams in the world. The final day of Paralympic racing will take place tomorrow (Saturday), while the Olympic classes will have medal races on Sunday.

“When you’re wearing those gold [leader] jerseys, everyone’s after you,” said Kendell, who’s team went 4,4,1 in three races today. “It’s going to be a battle tomorrow.”

The event also serves as the final regatta in US Sailing’s Rio 2016 Paralympic Athlete Selection Series in the 2.4mR class. Dee Smith (Annapolis, Md.) looks to be in a strong position to qualify on Sunday for the one-person keelboat event in Rio 2016, and sits in 7th place heading into the final day of 2.4mR racing.

In the Olympic classes, Finn sailor Caleb Paine (San Diego, Calif.) fell from 2nd overall to 8th after a challenging day of light-air action. Men’s 470 sailors Stu McNay (Providence, R.I.) and Dave Hughes (Miami, Fla.) remained in 8th place overall after scoring 16th in their only race. Annie Haeger (East Troy, Wisc.) and Briana Provancha (San Diego, Calif.) also notched a 16th, and remained in 11th overall. RS:X sailor Marion Lepert (Belmont, Calif.) is in 18th overall, and is currently 29 points from 10th place. All U.S. Olympic-class boats will look to have a strong finish to the full-fleet portion of the regatta, and qualify for Sunday’s medal races.

Racing at Sailing World Cup Hyères (April 27 – May 1) continues on Saturday with the final Paralympic races of the regatta.Olympic-class medal races take place on Sunday. American sailing fans will be able to watch medal race action LIVE online at WatchESPN (ESPN3).
