MIAMI, Fla. (January 2, 2019) – US Sailing’s Olympic Development Program (ODP) is kicking off 2019 with the next phase of Project Pipeline, which is the nation’s first long-term, high-performance youth sailing strategy. The goal of Project Pipeline is to give young U.S. competitors the skills necessary to compete successfully in all areas of international sailing, including the Olympic Games. Phase Two will focus on creating more opportunities for young athletes to try Olympic classes with more access to top-level coaching.
From January 3-6, talented sailors from across the country will attend the first ODP camp of 2019. The camp will be hosted by Miami Yacht Club and is the first of its kind to feature exclusively Olympic classes. Sailors in the Laser, Laser Radial, 49er, 49er FX, 470, Nacra 17, and RS:X classes will have the opportunity to train with some of the best coaches in the country.
While many sailors at the camp are building foundations for future campaigns, some US Sailing Team athletes who are campaigning for selection to the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 will also be in attendance.
These camps play a large role in preparing sailors for the US Sailing Team and pursuing Olympic Campaigns of their own. According to Leandro Spina, US Sailing’s Olympic Development Director, “ODP camps provide an amazing platform to raise the overall performance of U.S. athletes. We provide top-level coaching and advice while sailors from multiple classes have the opportunity to share experiences and push each other on their pursuit for excellence. The level of high-performance skill in the U.S. is on the rise, and we are proud to be part of each sailor’s journey.”
