The spectacular scenery and historic presence of San Francisco’s St. Francis Yacht Club offered the perfect backdrop for the most prestigious competitive sailing awards in the United States.On Thursday, February 28, Carmen and Emma Cowles and Jud Smith, were joined by family and friends, crew and teammates, coaches and supporters, past winners, sailing dignitaries, and representatives from US Sailing and Rolex, to celebrate US Sailing’s 2018 Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswomen of the Year.
US Sailing has created the US Sailing Team Squad in an effort to support potential US Sailing Team (USST) athletes. By identifying athletes as Squad members, US Sailing will more formally recognize individuals striving for a place on the Olympic podium and competing at the highest levels of the sport.
Registration is now open for the U.S. Junior Women’s Singlehanded Championship and U.S. Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship. The U.S. Junior Women’s Singlehanded Championship for the Leiter Trophy is scheduled for July 8 – 13, 2019, at Richmond Yacht Club (Richmond, Calif.). The U.S. Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship for the Ida Lewis Trophy is July 19 – 24, 2019 at the San Diego Yacht Club (San Diego, Calif.). Both of the championships will feature two days of clinic instruction led by US Sailing endorsed high-performance coaches and three days of competitive racing.
New fleet additions for the 2019 Championships include a Laser 4.7 fleet for the Leiter and a 29er fleet for the Ida Lewis. Other fleets represented at the regattas are Club 420s and Laser Radials.
J/70 World Champion, Jud Smith, and Girl’s International 420 Youth Sailing World Champions, Carmen and Emma Cowles, were selected as Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswomen of the Year for their remarkable sailing performances in 2018.
US Sailing and the NBC Sports Group are partnering to present World Sailing’s prestigious Hempel World Cup Series to U.S. viewers on the Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA, OlympicChannel.com, the Olympic Channel app, NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app.
The 2019 Hempel World Cup Series Miami came to a close this afternoon as the final medal races concluded. Representing the U.S., athletes Luke Muller (Fort Pierce, Fla.) and Paige Railey (Clearwater, Fla.) clinched bronze and silver medals respectively during their medal races at the 2019 Hempel World Cup Series Miami.
As nearly all of the racing at the Hempel World Cup Series Miami has been completed, more athletes have qualified for selection to the 2019 US Sailing Team. The national team is selected annually and consists of the top sailors competing in the events selected for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Athletes had the opportunity to qualify at the Hempel World Championships Aarhus 2018 and the 2019 Hempel World Cup Series Miami.

To celebrate the accomplishments of these individuals and organizations responsible for advancing sailing forward in their respective areas of focus and within their communities, US Sailing recognized these contributors on Thursday night, January 31, 2019, during an awards ceremony held at the 2019 National Sailing Programs Symposium (NSPS), hosted by the Florida Yacht Club.
