This week, the first event of the 2019 Olympic class World Championships begin, marking the opening of the U.S. Olympic trials for the sport of sailing. Racing begins Thursday, July 4, with the world’s best Laser sailors lining up in Sakaiminato City, Japan.
After two races today in both fleets, the final standings of the U.S. athletes have been set. Paige Railey jumped ahead of teammate Erika Reineke to take the top overall U.S. finish. Railey finished in eighth overall and Reineke finished just behind, in ninth. Chris Barnard still takes the lead in the Men’s Laser Standard fleet among U.S. Competitors. Barnard finished in 19th overall, followed by Malcolm Lamphere (84th), Henry Marshall (87th), Ford McCann (93rd), and Paul Didham (134th).
Racing will be taking place from May 13 to 19 at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy for the 2019 Volvo 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 European Championships.
Upon completion of racing at the 2019 Finn European Championships, Caleb Paine finished in 12th place overall, earning the U.S. country selection to the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 in the Finn class.
Tomorrow, racing at the 2019 470 European Championships will begin on Italy’s Ligurian Riviera. Organized by Yacht Club Sanremo in co-operation with Yacht Club degli Aregai, the Italian and International 470 class, the championship will boast a truly world class line-up. The championship is open to non-Europeans crews; several teams from countries outside of Europe will be competing this week, some are coming from as far away as China, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, the USA, Argentina or Brazil, Malaysia, and India.

The 50th Trofeo S.A.R Princesa Sofia Iberostar Regatta (Trofeo Sofia) has concluded, following Saturday’s medal races. In breezy conditions, three U.S. athletes secured a spot on the podium. Laser sailor, Chris Barnard (Newport Beach, Calif.), earned his first major title and will take home the gold medal. Pedro Pascual (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Erika Reineke (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) also earned spots on the podium. Both athletes clinched the bronze medal in their respective classes.
The 2019 Hempel World Cup Series Miami came to a close this afternoon as the final medal races concluded. Representing the U.S., athletes Luke Muller (Fort Pierce, Fla.) and Paige Railey (Clearwater, Fla.) clinched bronze and silver medals respectively during their medal races at the 2019 Hempel World Cup Series Miami.
