Charlie Buckingham Wins Italian Championship

Charlie Buckingham leading the Men’s Laser fleet at the 2020 Olympic Classes International Italian Championship

Monday, September 21, 2020 (Bristol, RI) – On the final day of the Olympic Classes International Italian Championship (CICO), Charlie Buckingham (Newport Beach, Calif.) clinched his victory in the Men’s Laser fleet. Buckingham finished one point ahead of silver medalist Robert Scheidt (BRA) and two ahead of his training partner and bronze medalist Juan Maegli (GUA).

Buckingham won half of the races throughout the event and finished outside the top three only once. He is coming off the heels of another impressive finish at the 2020 Kiel Week Regatta, which wrapped up on Sunday, September 13, 2020. Prior to finishing just outside the podium at that event, Buckingham hadn’t raced in six months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Resuming racing on solid footing, he will carry these two finishes with him as he looks ahead to the 2020 European Championships before resuming his training stateside.
