30 Teams Lined Up for 2022 US Team Racing Championship

This weekend, a record number of teams will take to the water in Norfolk, Virginia for the 2022 U.S. Team Racing Championship, hosted by Coastal Virginia Youth Sailing Foundation and Norfolk Yacht & Country Club. November 4-6, 30 teams will be competing for the George R. Hinman Trophy.

With a record number of teams comes a record number of women competing in this storied event. This year, 48 percent of competitors are female, with a record number of female drivers and all-female teams.

“Building off of the Swiss League run by Bristol YC last year, we are increasing the number of teams to thirty and using 36 FJs to create a fast-paced, exciting weekend of sailing on the Lafayette River,” said Sam Patterson, Hinman Event Chair. “It is an incredibly deep fleet in terms of talent. Team racing is one of the best disciplines in our sport for bringing people together, and a fantastic platform for retaining people in our sport after college sailing.”

US Sailing would like to thank sponsors Gill Marine and Regatta Craft Mixers for their support of this record-breaking event.

First held in 1981, the U.S. Team Racing Championship remains one of the most anticipated annual sailing championships of the season. This year’s Championship features an impressive list of accomplished teams and experienced team racers, many of whom have competed in or won this Championship in years past.

Winners of the 2021 event, Team Holiday Sideshow, are back and looking to win their third Hinman title. Also in attendance are the 2022 ICSA Women’s Team Racing national champions, competing under the team name Dawguettes. The team from Yale University includes Carmen and Emma Cowles, former members of the US Sailing Team.

The event will be run in the Swiss League format. Learn more about the format here: https://wilsontrophy.co.uk/swiss-league/
