Significant USWMRC Condition changes include:
- Section 5.2, a.: Changed the minimum number of entrants required to make the event an “official qualifier” from six (6) to five (5).
- Section 6.1, b.: Changed wording from “The top placing two skippers not already qualified for the Championship will be invited to the Championship Finals event.” to the following wording “The top placing skipper not already qualified for or invited to the Championship will be invited to the Championship Finals event.”
Safe Sport Training Requirements at US Sailing U.S. Championship Events
- Adults competing on the same boat as a minor are now required to complete the SafeSport Training prior to first day of racing. Take the training here.
US Sailing Membership- Join/Renew here – All competitors must have a current USSA membership valid through end of racing to be legible to complete. International athletes may show proof of current membership with MNA as an alternative.
US Sailing Waivers, Code of Conduct, Depiction Release All competitors are required to fill out a form in order to be eligible to compete.
The U.S. Women’s Match Racing Championship is a match race regatta for up to 10 all-female teams sailed on keelboats. The format includes a series of Qualifying Round Robin(s), Semi-Finals and a Finals Series.
The Allegra Knapp Mertz Trophy is awarded to the winner and the Mrs. Charles Francis Adams Memorial Trophy is presented to the runner-up.
CHAMPIONSHIP FACTS
- The event has applied for World Sailing (WS) Grade 3. This grading is subject to review by World Sailing. The event may be re-graded where there is clear reason to do so.
- Class rules will not apply.
- The rules for the handling of boats will apply and will also apply to any clinics, practice sailing and sponsor races.
- This event will be sailed in J22 type boats.
- The number of crew, including skipper, shall be 3 or 4.
- All registered crew shall sail all races.
- Total weight of crew, including skipper, dressed in at least shorts and shirts, shall not exceed 600 lbs.
QUALIFIER INFORMATION
- All competitors shall be current members of US Sailing at the time of the qualifying series
- Competitors from other countries shall either be current members of US Sailing or be members of their National Authority.
- Women skippers and open crew for all the qualifiers.
- If you can not sail in any of the clinegatta qualifiers, you can request an invitation by resume directly to the US Women’s Match Race Championship HERE.

Championship History
Founded in 1974, the U.S. Women’s Open Championship served the interest of female sailors who wished to compete against other women at the national level in double and singlehanded boats. The regattas were organized along traditional one design racing lines where boat preparation is a factor, and no eliminations were required. A boardsailing championship was added in 1981. A one-day clinic typically preceded the three-day championship regatta.
The Adams Memorial Trophy for doublehanded sailing was presented by Mrs.Henry (Adams) Morgan, and the Committee presented the Mertz Trophy for singlehanded sailing to honor Allegra Knapp Mertz as a four-time winner of the U.S. Women’s National Championship and many years of service as Chairperson of the Women’s Championship Committee. In 2000, a motion to change the event from fleet racing to match racing was passed. The first U.S. Women’s Match Racing Championship was held at Southern Yacht Club, November 11 – 14, 2002. The Mertz Trophy is awarded to the winner and the Adams Memorial to the runner-up.
