Youth Worlds Team Tunes Up at West Marine US Open Sailing Series San Diego

San Diego, CA (June 16, 2022) – The first stop in the West Marine US Open Sailing Series’ California tour comes to San Diego Yacht Club this week, June 17-19. Supported by Title Sponsor West Marine and National Sponsors Gowrie Group a Division of Risk Strategies and Gill Marine, this event features the ILCA 7, ILCA 6, 470, 29er, Finn, and Snipe.

US Sailing and West Marine are excited to further support the Olympic mission by running the 29er class National Championship and US Sailing Singlehanded Championship in conjunction with the US Open. Competition in these development classes lend themselves to the mission of the US Open Series: to be a domestic Olympic training pathway for American sailors. A huge thank you to Gill Marine and Regatta Craft Mixers for their support of the US Singlehanded Championship.

As well as hosting these championships, this event serves as a training ground for sailors competing in the Youth World Championship in The Hauge next month. Sailors Ian Peter Barnard (Men’s ILCA 6), and Katharine Doble (Women’s ILCA 6), Sammie Gardner & Alice Schmid (Women’s 29er), and Nyenhuis & Noah Nyenhuis (Men’s 29er) who are entered at the US Open this weekend, will compete against the best youth in the world July 8-15.

Beyond racing, Executive Director of US Olympic Sailing Paul Cayard will be joined by a panel of Olympic hopefuls at the San Diego West Marine store Saturday from 6:30-7:30. Hear about Cayard’s own Olympic journey and his vision to return the US Sailing Team to Olympic dominance, and from members of the US Youth Worlds Team who are currently on their own “Pathway to the Podium.” The event will also be live-streamed on the US Sailing Facebook Page.

New this year, competitors in the Olympic classes will compete for over $3,500 dollars in prize money. First place takes home $1,000, while second takes $500 and third $250. Competitors from North and Central America are eligible for prize money.
