Málaga, Spain (November 15, 2023) – Americans had a successful night at the World Sailing Awards yesterday, held at the World Sailing Annual Conference in Malaga, Spain. US Sailing volunteer Dick Rose was awarded the Beppe Croce Trophy, while US Ocean Race team 11thHour Racing were named Team of the Year.
Long-time US Sailing and World Sailing volunteer and sailor Dick Rose was awarded the Beppe Croce Trophy, presented to an individual who has made an outstanding volunteer contribution to the sport of sailing. Dick Rose’s contribution to the sport has spanned more than three decades.
Rose has been a member of both the US and World Sailing Racing Rules Committees and the US Appeals Committee for many years. As chair of the US rules committee, he was responsible for guiding the development of the “New Rules” during the landmark efforts to restructure and simplify the rules in 1997. Every four years, he prepares The Racing Rules of Sailing and US Prescriptions for publication by US Sailing, then participates in the painstaking task of proofreading the final version.
He has served as president of the North American Laser Class, a National Judge for US Sailing, and a Board member of The Sailing Foundation, and is well-known as the author of a column on the rules in Sailing World magazine since 1984. He has also been an active sailor in International 14s, Lasers, Snipes, Lightnings, Penguins and Laser 28s, among others.
Rose received the Nathanael G. Herreshoff Trophy, US Sailing’s most prestigious award, in 2012 and was inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame in 2021.
After a record-setting Ocean Race, American Ocean Race team 11th Hour Racing were awarded the Team of the Year award. The award was received by skipper Charlie Enright, who was also nominated for the 2023 Rolex Sailor of the Year, on behalf of the team. The team won the 2022-23 Ocean Race – the first American team to do so – and demonstrated all the qualities needed to succeed in one of the sport’s most demanding events.
The team has also supported a number of initiatives to improve ocean health and used their platform to create the Sustainability Toolbox, a suite of guides and templates that can help any team or organization implement their own sustainability program.
Americans Charlie Enright and Betsy Alison were also nominated for the 2023 Rolex World Sailor of the Year.
