US Sailing, SouthCoast Wind Announce Partnership

BRISTOL, R.I. (March 8, 2023) – US Sailing, the national governing body of the sport of sailing, and SouthCoast Wind, a joint venture of Shell New Energies US LLC and Ocean Winds North America, have announced a partnership in support of sailors and sailing organizations in the U.S. SouthCoast Wind will serve as the Official Offshore Wind Energy Partner of US Sailing.

Located near US Sailing’s Rhode Island headquarters on the Roger Williams University Campus, SouthCoast Wind is developing an offshore wind lease area with the potential to supply 2,400 megawatts of low-cost clean energy to electricity customers in New England, enough to power more than one million homes and businesses. SouthCoast Wind is committed to zero harm, innovation, industry development, and investing in local communities.

“There aren’t many better duos than sailing and wind,” said Alan Ostfield, CEO of US Sailing. “What we discovered in SouthCoast Wind was a driven, likeminded team of people. While their impressive offshore wind energy project is in development, they continue to support diversity, equity and inclusion in their industry, a commitment to safety, protecting our ocean environments, and dedication to innovation and technology – shared values that are also at the heart of US Sailing’s mission.”

SouthCoast Wind will support US Sailing, sailors, and sailing organizations as presenting sponsor of the 2023 U.S. Youth Championship and U.S. Junior Women’s Singlehanded and Doublehanded Championships, to take place this summer on Mount Hope Bay. Southcoast Wind will also support Reach, US Sailing’s STEM education initiative. Since its inception in 2012, Reach has had an immeasurable impact on youth across the country who are learning Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math concepts using sailing as an educational platform.

“We are thrilled to partner with US Sailing, and to support their mission of fostering education, safety, and equal opportunity in marine recreation,” said Francis Slingsby, CEO, SouthCoast Wind. “Our collaboration will support the development of local STEM programming and introduce hundreds of youth to the beauty of Mount Hope Bay during this summer’s National Youth Sailing Championships.”
