US Sailing Championship of Champions Heads to New Jersey

BRICK, NJ (October 5, 2022) – Starting this Friday, 20 teams will take to the water for the 48th US Sailing Championship of Champions, presented by Gowrie Group, a division of Risk Strategies, at Shore Acres Yacht Club in Brick, New Jersey. Racing takes place on October 7-9, 2022 and will be contested in the MC Scow.

The Championship, first held in 1976, invites winning helmspersons of one design National, North American or World Championships to compete head-to-head in a one-design, fleet racing regatta to determine which class has the ultimate champion. 20 different one design classes will be represented, from the Buccaneer to the Lightning.

Names to watch out for include David Starck (Amherst, NY), who is fresh off a tight win at the 2022 Lightning World Championship. Starck was also third at 2021 Lightning North American Championship. He will be sailing with Jody Starck, winner of the 2021 Lightning Women’s North American Championship and second at the 2021 Lightning Atlantic Coast Championship.

Bill Draheim (Royse City, TX) will bring a wealth of experience in the MC Scow fleet. Draheim received his invite to the Championship of Champions by winning the MC Scow Masters Nationals.

This year’s invitees won their respective championships between August 22, 2021 and August 15, 2022. Competitors can choose to sail doublehanded or singlehanded, provided their overall weight is under 320 pounds and start and end the event with the same number of crew. US Sailing would like to thank Title Sponsor Gowrie Group, a division of Risk Strategies, and National Sponsors Gill Marine and Regatta Craft Mixers for their support of this event.
