Texas Corinthian Yacht Club to Host U.S. Adult Sailing Championship This Weekend

KEMAH, TX. (October 20, 2021) —From Hawaii to Rhode Island, some of the country’s best adult sailors will head to Texas for a weekend of competition and camaraderie at the 2021 U.S. Adult Sailing Championship. The event is sailed in Sonars, and practice will start on Wednesday, October 20, with racing Thursday through Sunday. Nine teams, each representing a regional sailing association from around the country, plus the club’s home team, will contest the regatta. Winners will be awarded the Clifford D. Mallory Trophy. The event is hosted by Texas Corinthian Yacht Club and sponsored by Regatta Craft Mixers

Texas Corinthian YC is no stranger to this regatta, having hosted in 1959. “Back in those days, the defending Champion hosted the Regatta the year following their victory,” says Jack Daniel, Event Chair at TCYC. “Members Bob Mosbacher, with Crew Pete Masterson and George Francisco II, won the 1958 Mallory Cup held at American Yacht Club. The 1959 Championship was won by Buddy Melges — now an honorary member at TCYC — and he went on to win the 1960 and 1961 Championships as well.”

The Club has overcome quite a few challenges ahead of this year’s U.S. Adult Sailing Championship, dealing with the pandemic and hurricane damage to the property in mid-September. “We’ve made the necessary repairs, and our fleet of Sonars is well-equipped and outfitted with brand new, never-before-used suits of sails,” says Daniel.

“Even though I am not racing, I am excited to be back on the waters of Galveston Bay,” says US Sailing National Adult Sailing Championship Chair Samson Vasquez. “The team at Texas Corinthian of the volunteers have been hard at it to put on a stellar event. With this being my first year as chairman, I got lucky. All I had to do was just show up.”

“These waters were the start of my sailing journey,” he adds. “With teams from around the nation and the farthest team coming in from Hawaii, it will prove to be a slugfest.” Vasquez plans to be on the water this weekend, capturing the action via drone.

“For a small club of only 165 member families, TCYC has a history of hosting some of the finest one-design competitions of the modern era, and we can’t wait to begin the 2021 version of the U.S. Adult Sailing Championship underway this Thursday,” says Daniel.
