In 2025, Mt. Baker Rowing and Sailing Center made a transformative investment in youth development with the launch of its first-ever youth sailing team. The program quickly grew to include 15 dedicated sailors participating in twice-weekly practices. Each team member advanced through the Center’s Learn to Sail summer programs, underscoring Mt. Baker’s commitment to providing a clear and sustainable pathway from introductory instruction to competitive participation.
The Center’s broader instructional impact during the summer of 2025 reflects both growth and community engagement. Mt. Baker recorded 151 total registrations across four Learn to Sail classes, serving 127 unique youth sailors from 106 families. Participation included 170 Optimist sailors and 81 double-handed sailors, with more than 30 youth expressing interest in joining the newly formed competitive team. In addition to its youth programming, the Center offered adult Learn to Sail classes, adult Learn to Race camps, and Learn to Windsurfing courses, reinforcing its role as a comprehensive sailing resource for the broader community.
Central to Mt. Baker’s success is its unwavering commitment to equity, inclusion, and representation in a sport where access has historically been limited by socioeconomic and geographic barriers. The Center has intentionally cultivated opportunities for youth from racially, culturally, and economically diverse backgrounds. Many participants reside in nearby neighborhoods and are able to bike to practice, reflecting a uniquely accessible and community-centered model for sailing instruction in Seattle.
Mt. Baker’s instructional philosophy emphasizes safety, honor, integrity, sportsmanship, and personal growth. Coaches and staff are dedicated to creating an environment in which young sailors not only develop technical proficiency on the water but also build confidence, leadership skills, and a sense of responsibility to their teammates and community.
In a single season, Mt. Baker Rowing and Sailing Center has established the foundation for an inclusive and sustainable sailing program with the potential to serve as a model for community-based instruction nationwide. Through measurable growth, high standards of safety and teaching excellence, and a deep commitment to expanding access to the sport, Mt. Baker exemplifies the spirit and criteria of the Captain Joe Prosser Award for Excellence in Sailing Instruction and is deserving of recognition by US Sailing.
