Macatawa Bay Yacht Club Hosts U.S. Adult Championships

HOLLAND, MI (October 4, 2023) – Teams from six of the US Sailing Regional Sailing Associations (RSAs) will compete for one of US Sailing’s oldest and most storied adult championship trophies, the Clifford D. Mallory Trophy, October 4-8 at Macatawa Bay Yacht Club. Eight teams from across the country will compete in the U.S. Adult Championship in VXOnes.

Teams were chosen by their Regional Sailing Associations to compete in this event. The championship is hosted in borrowed boats.

“The weekend forecast looks to be a bit challenging with winds forecast to be at or above the maximum limit for most of the weekend. Hopefully we can find a couple weather windows over the course of the weekend to run some championship level races for the competitors,” said Principal Race Officer Richard Reichelsdorfer. “I wish all of the competitors best of luck in their endeavors to become US Sailing champions.”

Noted as US Sailing’s most coveted Adult Sailing Championship, the Clifford D. Mallory Trophy began as a men’s event in 1952 and transitioned to an open event in 1993.

While youth and women had national, ladder-system championships for a quarter century, it was not until 1952 that a similar championship for men eighteen years and older was established during Robert N. Bavier, Jr.’s tenure as Executive Director of NAYRU.

US Sailing would like to thank Gill Marine and Goslings Rum for their sponsorship of the event, and to Macatawa Bay Yacht Club for hosting.
