U.S. Olympic Committee Honors Leandro Spina With Developmental Coach of the Year Award

The United States Olympic Committee announced its annual award recipients on Monday, December 3 for three supporting coaches of the year in 2018. US Sailing’s Olympic Development Director, Leandro Spina, was named Developmental Coach of the Year. This award is presented to a coach at the youth club, high school or junior level, or a coach who is directly responsible for training athletes to reach the junior and/or elite level.

Richard Allsopp, a pioneer in powerboating and sailing education, passed away on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at the age of 84. He will be greatly missed by the entire boating community.

US Sailing Team at The Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs

Earlier this month, the US Sailing Team gathered at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) to address the off the water components of their training and to complete final planning for the year ahead. Corpus Christi Yacht Club Wins 11th Hour Racing Sustainability Award

The Corpus Christi Yacht Club, host of the 2018 Youth Sailing World Championships in July, was honored with World Sailing’s 11th Hour Racing Sustainability Award at the World Sailing Annual Conference Tuesday, October 30 in Sarasota, Fla. The award celebrates the effective execution or ongoing delivery of high-impact, highly-replicable sustainability initiatives. Driven by the dedication of the CCYC volunteer Green Team, the Youth Worlds was the first World Sailing Championship with a focus on ocean conservation and sustainability.

Cory Sertl Elected President of US Sailing’s Board of Directors

The US Sailing Nominating Committee named new members of the National Governing Body’s Board of Directors who were officially elected on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at US Sailing’s Annual Meeting in San Francisco, hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club. Cory Sertl (Rochester, N.Y.) was elected as the next President of US Sailing. Rich Jepsen (Alameda, Calif.) was elected Vice President.

Potts, Yankee Creole Race Team Wins U.S. Match Racing Championship

Pearson Potts (Newport, R.I.) won the Prince of Wales Bowl at the 2018 U.S. Match Racing Championship after three days of intense racing this weekend in Chicago. Potts and his all-american crew won the overall Championship this year after claiming the title of National Champions in 2017.

Draheim, Favela Capture Championship of Champions

Bill Draheim (Royse City, Texas) and Rod Favela (Heath, Texas) rode a string of three victories in four races to win the 44th Championship of Champions regatta, a US Sailing Championship event. Hosted by the Atlanta Yacht Club and raced in the Y-Flyer, Draheim and Favela won with the low score of 22 points, good for 23-point victory.

The 51st U.S. Match Racing Championship, hosted by the Chicago Yacht Club, features ten talented teams comprised of both men and women skippers and crew, who will race for the coveted Prince of Wales Bowl over three days.
