On Sunday, January 14th, the USST and Olympic Development Program athletes were joined by local and foreign sailors and volunteers who participated in the US Sailing Coconut Grove Coastal Clean-Up. The event was organized by US Sailing in partnership with VolunteerCleanup.Org and was sponsored by World Sailing. Upwards of 100 individuals collected over 850 pounds of trash from the mangroves lining Kennedy Park and Prime Point Marina. The USST athletes also took part in a workshop specifically designed to help identify how to become ‘change makers’ and reduce plastic pollution.
Three men and three women have been shortlisted for US Sailing’s 2018 Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year awards. Once again, the annual rundown of the year’s “best in the U.S.” represents a wide range of accomplished sailors from various disciplines and at different stages of their respective careers.
US Sailing’s Olympic Development Program (ODP) is kicking off 2019 with the next phase of Project Pipeline, which is the nation’s first long-term, high-performance youth sailing strategy. The goal of Project Pipeline is to give young U.S. competitors the skills necessary to compete successfully in all areas of international sailing, including the Olympic Games. Phase Two will focus on creating more opportunities for young athletes to try Olympic classes with more access to top-level coaching.
US Sailing Olympic Sailing Committee (OSC) has released the selection procedures for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Sailing Team. The Games of the XXXII Olympiad will take place from July 24 through August 9, 2020. The sailing events will take place at the Enoshima Yacht Harbour venue in Enoshima, Japan. Up to 15 athletes will have the opportunity to represent the U.S. in one of the 10 sailing events.
The United States Olympic Committee announced its annual award recipients on Monday, December 3 for three supporting coaches of the year in 2018. US Sailing’s Olympic Development Director, Leandro Spina, was named Developmental Coach of the Year. This award is presented to a coach at the youth club, high school or junior level, or a coach who is directly responsible for training athletes to reach the junior and/or elite level.
Earlier this month, the US Sailing Team gathered at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) to address the off the water components of their training and to complete final planning for the year ahead. The athletes conducted fitness testing, learned from physicians, set objectives for 2019 and beyond, and found inspiration from Olympians.
The Sailing Foundation of New York raised over $300,000 for the US Sailing Team at the 2018 Golden Spinnaker Benefit Dinner, held on Friday, Sept. 28 at the iconic New York Yacht Club Harbour Court in Newport, RI. The special evening highlighted the incredible support of the sailing community to come together and bolster the hard working efforts of these athletes aspiring to compete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
The U.S. Youth Olympic Sailing Team has touched-down in Argentina for the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018 from October 6-18, 2018. Held every four years, 2018 will mark the third edition of the Summer Youth Olympic Games, which are expected to include nearly 4,000 athletes from over 200 nations. The sailing events will welcome over 100 athletes aged 15-18 from 44 countries. Five sailing events will take place at Club Náutico San Isidro in the Argentine capital.
Congratulations to Dee Smith for winning a Bronze Medal in the 2.4mR event at the Para World Sailing Championships 2018 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, hosted by Sail Sheboygan and SEAS.
The first event of the 2018-19 World Cup Series came to a conclusion in Enoshima, Japan on Sunday, the second of two medal days to determine the final standings for this six-day World Sailing international regatta. US Sailing Team Men’s 470 team Stu McNay and Dave Hughes led the US Sailing Team with a fifth place finish.
