On Sunday, December 8, 2019, the Hyundai 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 World Championships in Auckland New Zealand wrapped, marking the end of the 2019 year for the U.S. in these classes. US Sailing has hired Sally Barkow as Olympic Team Coach and Performance Manager. Barkow brings a strong background as an athlete to this position. She is a two-time Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year, an Olympian and a two-time Volvo Ocean Race competitor. She will be joining the US Sailing staff to coach U.S. Nacra 17 athletes and assist US Sailing Team coaches in managing the athlete training programs.

US Sailing Team Women’s RS:X athlete, Farrah Hall (Annapolis, Md.), recently participated at the RS:X equipment sea trials for the 2024 Olympics. During the trials, World Sailing conducted comprehensive on the water testing and onshore evaluation of five equipment options to replace the Men’s and Women’s RS:X classes at the 2024 Games. Yesterday, World Sailing released that the iFoil has been recommended as the replacement equipment. The 2020 Hempel World Cup Series Enoshima came to a quiet close on Sunday, September 1. Thanks to light winds, only two of the five Medal Races scheduled for the last day of sailing were completed. The Men’s and Women’s 470 classes enjoyed Medal Races while the Finn, Laser, and Laser Radial podiums were decided based on the cumulative standings of the first ten races.

After a long day spent waiting for wind under postponement, only one of the five scheduled Medal Races was completed on the final day of the Ready Steady Tokyo – Sailing, Olympic Test Event. In the Men’s fleet, Stu McNay (Providence, R.I.) and Dave Hughes (Miami, Fla.) finished in eighteenth overall as the highest placed U.S. boat. The top-three U.S. representatives in the Women’s fleet, Atlantic Brugman (Winthrop, Mass) and Nora Brugman (Winthrop, Mass.), Nikole Barnes (Miami, Fla.) and Lara Dallman Weiss (Shoreview, Minn.), and Carmen Cowles (Larchmont, N.Y.) and Emma Cowles (Larchmont, N.Y.), finished in 30th, 31st, and 32nd, respectively.
