The North Cape Yacht Club and the greater La Salle, Michigan community, located south of Detroit, have welcomed the 93 youth sailors to their spectacular venue situated on the west end of Lake Erie for the 2018 Chubb U.S. Junior Sailing Championships. US Sailing’s oldest championship will feature three days of racing for the historic Sears Cup, Bemis Trophy and Smythe Trophy this Wednesday, August 8 through Friday, August 10.
Another great week of junior women’s sailing came to an exciting conclusion Sunday on Lake Erie. It was an especially exceptional weekend for the team of Maddie Hawkins and Yumi Yoshiyasu who claimed the Ida Lewis Trophy at the 2018 U.S. Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship, hosted by Mentor Harbor Yachting Club.
Due to a change in dates for the Nations Cup Grand Final from October, 2018 to April, 2019, US Sailing can nominate the 2018 U.S. Women’s National Champion skipper. The highest finishing team composed of all U.S. citizens or resident aliens at the 2018 U.S. Women’s Match Racing Championship, being held August 23-26, 2018 at the St. Francis Yacht Club, will become the 2018 U.S. National Champions.
Mentor Harbor Yachting Club will host the 2018 U.S. Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship for the Ida Lewis Trophy this week. The event begins with two full-day clinics on Wednesday and Thursday, July 25-26, with nationally recognized coaches, followed by three days of intense competition in the Club 420 on Lake Erie this Friday through Sunday, July 27-29.
On the heels of an exciting and successful U.S. Youth World’s Team performance at the 2018 Youth Sailing World Championships last week in Corpus Christi, Texas, featuring four gold medals and one silver, another group of 30 talented young sailors in Laser Radials convened on Long Island Sound to compete for the Nancy Leiter Clagett Memorial Trophy at the 2018 U.S. Junior Women’s Singlehanded Championship.
Following three days of exciting racing on Galveston Bay, Malcolm Lamphere (Lake Forest, Ill.) became the 2018 U.S. Singlehanded Men’s Champion and Hanne Weaver (Gig Harbor, Wash.) was named the 2018 U.S. Singlehanded Women’s Champion.
Ten teams of four, each with at least one female crew, competed at this year’s 2018 U.S. Youth Match Racing Championship for the Rose Cup. Hosted by Oakcliff Sailing and Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club, the competitors finished an exciting Round Robin in the late Saturday evening, the second day of racing. The hot and humid conditions continued Sunday with no breeze and no wind. The race committee could not start any races past 1:00 pm ET, so they referred to the results of the previous two days to score the regatta.
