Host Spotlight: Columbia Sailing Club to Host 2026 U.S. Multihull Championship

US Sailing is pleased to highlight Columbia Sailing Club (S.C.) as the host of the upcoming U.S. Multihull Championship, organized in partnership with Weta Class North America. Set on the expansive waters of Lake Murray April 29 through May 3, the event will bring top multihull sailors from across the country together for a premier competition that combines high-performance racing with a welcoming and community-driven atmosphere.

Serving as Regatta Chair, Stephanie Taylor is leading a dedicated team of volunteers to deliver a first-class championship experience. The inspiration to host the event reflects the spirit of the club itself. The level of commitment to the sport and the community helped spark the effort to bring a National Championship to Columbia and highlights the culture of dedication that defines the club.

Racing will take place on Lake Murray, a renowned inland sailing venue known for its wide-open racecourse, steady breeze, and relatively flat water: ideal conditions for multihull performance. The lake’s size and accessibility allow for dynamic course setting and fair racing, while its scenic surroundings provide an inviting backdrop for competitors and spectators alike.

This year’s event will feature the Weta Trimaran, a high-performance yet approachable multihull named Sailing World Magazine’s 2010 Boat of the Year. The Weta’s lightweight design and inherent stability make it suitable for both competitive racing and recreational sailing, appealing to a wide range of sailors. It handles with the responsiveness of a monohull, tacking and gybing with ease, while delivering the speed and excitement expected of a multihull. Equipped with a furling asymmetrical spinnaker, the boat offers an added layer of performance and fun, particularly in downwind conditions, making it well suited to the open waters of Lake Murray. The class continues to grow across North America, supported by a strong and inclusive community that welcomes both new and experienced sailors.

Columbia Sailing Club is focused on delivering an experience that extends beyond the racecourse through social events and quality time both on and off the water. “Competitors should walk away with great racing, new friendships, and lasting memories,” said Taylor. “A championship should challenge sailors on the water, connect them with others who share their passion, and leave them proud to have been part of something special.”

Taylor emphasized that successful events rely on preparation, communication, and adaptability. From early planning and clear race management to strong volunteer support and a welcoming atmosphere ashore, each element plays a role in shaping the overall experience. She noted that while conditions may vary, maintaining flexibility and keeping sailors informed helps ensure a positive environment for all participants. Above all, she stressed the importance of community, recognizing that the moments shared off the water are just as meaningful as the results on it. “If sailors leave saying, ‘that was fun,’ you’ve won,” she said.

With a strong volunteer base, an engaged sailing community, and a dynamic fleet, Columbia Sailing Club is well positioned to deliver a memorable U.S. Multihull Championship. US Sailing looks forward to an event that will showcase both the competitive excellence and camaraderie that define the sport.

There is still time for sailors to register and be part of this exciting National Championship, with competitors encouraged to secure their spot and experience racing on one of the Southeast’s premier sailing venues.
