An Interview with Laura Grondin

Why do you want to be a member of US Sailing’s Board of Directors?

I have participated in many ways: as a kid learning to sail, as a sailing instructor, as a college racer, as a

cruiser, as a crew, as a skipper, as a yacht club member and officer and as a one-design class leader.

While my current focus is racing sport boats, I believe that all forms of sailing should be celebrated. I

want to help US Sailing bring sailing to a broader audience and demonstrate and improve the

organization’s value to all sailors.

How can community sailing centers, yacht clubs and other sailing organizations collaborate with

each other more on key initiatives to grow sailing?

Identify successful programs that engage prospective or new sailors of all ages and share those

details with other organizations.

How can these organizations and other sailing industries integrate with their local communities

to provide more awareness for prospective new sailors?

Build an exciting and interactive model to introduce sailing within STEM education.

What can US Sailing do to help facilitate these partnerships?

Together, we need to find ways to make sailing more popular. Seeing how fun sailing can be and then

having the opportunity to experience it are keys to success.

How have US Sailing’s programs and services impacted your overall sailing experience?

I have benefited most from the training and education that US Sailing offers. Recently, I completed the

offshore safety at sea course. The combination of on-line learning and a one-day in person session

was excellent. As a racer, having well-trained and skilled race officials and jury members is vital to a

competitive and enjoyable racing experience.

Is it important for sailors to be members of US Sailing?

Yes! US Sailing plays an important role in supporting US Sailing Team athletes, and sailor athletes. In

addition, US Sailing provides valuable education and support for many organizations and for sailors.

The more members that US Sailing has, the more support it can provide to all sailors and to its sailor

athletes.
