Qualification for the 2016 US Sailing Team – Paralympic Classes

1.1 The top eligible finisher at the 2015 Para World Sailing Championships will qualify for the team with the #1 ranking and will be offered access to EAHI.

1.2 The top eligible finisher at the 2016 SWC Miami who did not qualify under section 1.1 will qualify for the team with the #2 ranking. All other eligible finishers will not qualify for the team but will be ranked in their class according to their finish.

1.3 In the event that team member with the #2 ranking qualifies for the 2016 Paralympic Team,  EAHI will be transferred to that athlete/team from the athlete/team qualified under section 1.1.

2 Sonar and SKUD

2.1 The top eligible finisher at the 2015 Para World Sailing Championships will qualify for the team with the #1 ranking and will be offered access to EAHI.

2.2 The second eligible finisher at the 2015 Para World Sailing Championships will qualify for the team with the #2 ranking.

2.3 In the event that team member with the #2 ranking qualifies for the 2016 Paralympic Team,  EAHI will be transferred to that athlete/team from the athlete/team qualified under section 1.1.

Eligible athletes/teams who qualify for the 2016 Paralympic Team who did not qualify under sections 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, or 2.2 will qualify for the team.

Before being formally placed on the US Sailing Team, athletes that have qualified above must execute:

4.1 The US Sailing Team Athlete Agreement, and;

4.2 The Code of Conduct.

Athletes or teams that are placed on the US Sailing Team will have the option to execute the US Sailing Team Commercial Agreement Level 1 and Level 2.

Athletes or teams who have been placed on the 2016 US Sailing Team will be removed from the team if/when:

6.1 They resign from the US Sailing Team or retire from active Paralympic class competition

6.2 They are found in violation of the Code of Conduct by the OSC

6.3 The calendar year ends

2016 Direct Athlete Support (DAS) Details, Tasks, and Conditions

2016 DAS will be awarded only to 2016 Paralympic Games Team members. All six athletes will receive the same DAS payment of $5,000. Payment will be made in full on June 1, 2016, unless one of the Second Selection events is a non-event per Section 1.2.1 of the Selection Procedures, in which case awards will occur within seven days of the conclusion of the replacement event.

Athletes must complete the following tasks in 2016 in order to receive their funding:
  1. Minimum 45 days of Training and Competition in Paralympic Equipment including the following:
  • At least 2 major events (Palma, Hyeres, Garda, Worlds, other major Disabled or Open Class regattas)
  • At least 1 Training Camp in Rio Para Games Venue prior to start of Paralympic Games trip
  1. Attend US Sailing Team Training Camps as required.
  2. Participate in US Sailing Team Performance Enhancement Training (PET).
  3. Participating in a professional physical training and nutrition program. Complete medical screening and physical assessments as assigned with reporting/updates to team doctor and/or physiotherapist on regular basis.
  4. Fill out detailed schedule and periodization form to be approved by the High Performance Director and quarterly progress reports to Paralympic Coach.
  5. Execute and abide by the 2016 Athlete Agreement and Code of Conduct.

Operation Gold Awards

Operation Gold Awards are designed to reward U.S. athletes for top-place finishes in a world championship competition, and are available to any U.S. athletes who compete in sports/disciplines/events on the program of the next Olympic or Paralympic Games.

Paralympic Sports

For Paralympic sports, the Operation Gold qualifying competition is the Paralympic Games in a Paralympic year and the World Championships in non-Paralympic years. In the Paralympic year, multiple Operation Gold Awards will be paid to qualifying athletes. In non-Paralympic years, Operation Gold Awards are limited to one award per athlete in a program year.
