When 10-year-old Xander first arrived at the local community sailing center last spring, he was understandably nervous. It wasn’t just that he’d never been in a boat before. He was also still learning to swim!
“Just standing on the dock caused him so much anxiety,” said his coach in the Siebel Sailors Program. “We didn’t think we’d see him again after that spring.”
But thanks to your support, Xander is an enthusiastic sailor now!
That’s because your generosity enabled his coach to take the time to ease Xander’s fears and build trust. That’s a critical piece of the Siebel Sailors Program. During sailing lessons, all the kids told stories, sang songs, and played games. And they talked about their individual interests and concerns. This gave Xander the chance to address his fears and gain self-confidence.
Then he did something remarkable. He signed up for the summer session of the Siebel Sailors Program. Xander wanted to be on the water. And he registered for the fall session, too!
“He came back more relaxed because he knew what to expect,” his coach said. “And he was eager to learn because he remembered so much from the spring.”
The fall session – Xander’s third time as a Siebel Sailor – started with a group question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Xander was the first to answer. “A gamer,” he shouted. “And a sailor!”
Your support enables the Siebel Sailors Program to reach kids like Xander, kids from under-resourced communities who wouldn’t typically have the chance to sail, let alone develop a lasting commitment to the sport.
