In this role, Peterson will help strengthen philanthropic support and strategic partnerships that advance US Sailing’s mission, support sailors at every level of the sport, and contribute to the success of the Team as it prepares for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
Peterson brings more than two decades of experience working within the sailing community. Most recently, she spent 20 years with Gowrie Group Insurance and Risk Strategies, where she worked closely with sailors, yacht clubs, marine organizations, and industry partners across the country.
A lifelong sailor with deep ties to the sport, Peterson combines professional expertise with firsthand experience as a competitor, volunteer leader, and advocate for sailing. She was a member of the US Sailing Team and campaigned in the 470 class through two Olympic cycles. A four-time College All-American at Dartmouth College, she has also competed in numerous US Sailing Championships throughout her sailing career.
In addition to her competitive accomplishments, Peterson has dedicated significant time to volunteer leadership. She has served Sachems Head Yacht Club as commodore, board member, and junior program chair, helping to grow participation and strengthen community engagement through sailing. Today, she remains an active competitor and brings the perspective of an athlete, volunteer leader, sailing parent, and longtime member of the sailing community.
Through these experiences, Peterson has developed strong relationships throughout the sport and a deep understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing sailors, clubs, organizations, and supporters. Her passion for sailing and commitment to building meaningful partnerships will help advance US Sailing’s strategic goals and strengthen support for the future of the sport.
“We are thrilled to welcome Whitney to the US Sailing staff,” said Charlie Enright, US Sailing CEO. “Her unique combination of sailing experience, industry knowledge, and relationship-building expertise makes her exceptionally well positioned to help grow support for our mission and connect more people to the future of sailing in the United States.”
“Sailing has been a defining part of my life, and I am honored to join US Sailing at such an exciting time for the organization and the sport,” said Peterson. “I am excited to help strengthen philanthropic support and partnerships that advance US Sailing’s strategic goals and create opportunities for sailors at every level of the sport.”
