The Maritime Malt Recognizes Remarkable Members Of Sailing Communities Across the Country

NEW YORK, NY (November 5, 2015)—Old Pulteney and US Sailing have teamed up once again to honor men and women in sailing communities around the country for their humanitarian achievements. The Maritime Heroes Award recognizes those who are making significant contributions to volunteer, educate, advocate or simply encourage others to explore the sport. New for this year, the winner will receive a five thousand dollar grant to continue their efforts within the sailing community, in addition to being honored at the Sailing Leadership Forum 2016, hosted by US Sailing.

“Old Pulteney and the Maritime Heroes Award program continues to do a remarkable job at recognizing these selfless individuals who are successfully using sailing as a way to make a positive difference in peoples’ lives, on and off the water,” said Jack Gierhart, Executive Director of US Sailing. “US Sailing is honored to have the opportunity to celebrate their contributions.”

“Through the Maritime Heroes Award program, we have been able to share the stories of these extraordinary individuals and showcase their contributions,” said David Lind, Vice President of International Beverage USA. “Old Pulteney has been so inspired over the years that we have decided to help support their work by creating a five thousand dollar grant.”

Last year’s winners were Richard Ramos and Aleef Mahmud of Medford, Massachusetts. Ramos, a former sailor who suffers from a disabling spinal cord injury following a diving incident, thought he would never sail again. After meeting Mahmud, an engineer from Rochester Institute of Technology through Community Boating, INC., the two created an apparatus that would allow Richard, and others with similar injuries, to pursue their marine passions.

Nominations for The Maritime Heroes Award are being accepted from November 5, 2015 through November 20, 2015 at www.oldpulteney.com/maritime-heroes. Finalists will be selected by Old Pulteney and US Sailing representatives. The winner will be honored at the Sailing Leadership Forum, taking place February 4–6, 2016 in San Diego, California.

The Old Pulteney Distillery in Wick is one of the most northerly facilities on the Scottish mainland, where it overlooks the North Sea. Known as the ‘Maritime Malt,’ its extreme location and unique stills have resulted in its distinctive flavor, bursting with the power and subtlety of the sea.

Old Pulteney’s expressions have been the recipients of numerous accolades including Whisky Bible’s 2012 World Whisky of the Year Award, San Francisco World Spirits Competition’s Gold and Double Gold Medals, Beverage Testing Institute’s Gold Medals and many others.
