This week, the Columbia Sailing Club on Lake Murray will host the 2026 U.S. Multihull Championship, taking place April 29 through May 3. Established in 1985, the event is one of US Sailing’s premier national championships.
“US Sailing is thrilled to be working with Columbia Sailing Club along with its members and volunteers to deliver this year’s U.S. Multihull Championship. We expect the sailing to be super competitive on the water and hope that Lake Murray delivers great racing conditions for the sailors,” said Betsy Alison, Director of Adult Programs. “As the event wraps up on Sunday, we look forward to presenting medals to the top 5 and naming the 2026 U.S. Multihull Champion!”
The championship will bring together top multihull sailors from across the United States to battle for the Hobie Alter Cup in the Weta Trimaran. The Weta, which was named Boat of the Year by Sailing World Magazine in 2010, is known for its accessibility and performance, allowing sailors to race hard and have a recreation-friendly boat.
Racing will take place on Lake Murray, a venue known for consistent spring wind conditions that support fair and competitive racing. The schedule includes four days of on-the-water competition, along with standard championship briefings and shoreside functions, supported by Goslings Rum and organized by the host club.
“Competitors should walk away with great racing, new friendships, and lasting memories,” said Stephanie Taylor, event chair. “A championship should challenge sailors on the water, connect them with others who share their passion, and leave them proud to have been part of something special.”
As a national title event, the U.S. Multihull Championship plays an important role in the development and visibility of multihull sailing in the United States. The 2026 edition is expected to maintain a competitive fleet and a structured racing program consistent with recent championships.
