CASCAIS, PORTUGAL (June 14, 2021) – Stephanie Roble (East Troy, Wis.) and Maggie Shea (Wilmette, Ill.) finished Act II of the 49er & 49erFX Championship in 5th place, just five points out of a podium finish. Racing was tight for the 15 of the 21 49erFXs that will see each other this summer in Tokyo, Japan for the 2020 Olympic Games. The Cascais event was Steph and Maggie’s final formal regatta before the summer.

“It was a small fleet of 21 boats and included almost the whole Olympic fleet,” said Shea. “We had a variety of conditions throughout the week which was a great test of our skills. We took a few risks at the beginning of the week, which resulted in an OCS penalty and a capsize. But we rallied for the last seven races, brought our average race score from 8.5 to 6.8, and we climbed the rankings from 10th to 5th. In the end, we were five points away from the podium in 5th place.”

“From here, we will sail a couple more weeks in Portugal to keep our wave-sailing skills fresh before we head to Miami for some heat acclimation training,” continued Shea.”We fly to Japan on July 10th, and we will hit the water on July 14.”
