Nevin Snow Wins his First U.S. Match Racing Championship

(October 9, 2016) – The #3 ranked match racer in the country, Nevin Snow (San Diego, Calif.), may be moving up the rankings following this weekend’s triumphant performance in San Diego at the 2016 U.S. Match Racing Championship. The San Diego native earned his first Prince of Wales Bowl in impressive fashion by winning 17 of 18 races, including a 3-0 win over three-time champion, Dave Dellenbaugh (Easton, Conn.) in Sunday’s Final series. Crewing for Snow was Nick Kaschak (San Diego, Calif.), Alex Curtiss (Lake Bluff, Ill.) and Peter Busch (San Diego, Calif.).

The San Diego Yacht Club hosted the 49th edition of the U.S. Match Racing Championship this Columbus Day weekend. Ten qualifying teams went head-to-head for the Prince of Wales Bowl in the J/22 on San Diego Bay.

Snow swept the round robin stage with nine consecutive wins to earn the #1 seed. He defeated Steve Natvig, 3-0, in the quarterfinals and Colin Merrick, 2-1 (Snow trailed 1-0), in the semifinals.

Final Results

Helms qualified for this national championship through a series of events run throughout the country. Invitations were issued to the winning skippers at each of the 2016 U.S. Match Racing Championship Qualifiers, as well as the 2015 U.S. Women’s Match Racing Champion.

Returning to take another shot at this US Sailing National Championship was three-time (2013, 2002, 1984) U.S. Match Racing Champion Dave Dellenbaugh. He was joined by his two daughters, Rebecca and Emily (Easton, Conn.), as well as Jay Lurie (New Canaan, Conn.).
