Host Spotlight: Larchmont Yacht Club

As one of the oldest and most renowned yacht clubs in North America, Larchmont Yacht Club (LYC) boasts a 145-year legacy of excellence in yacht racing and a deep commitment to fostering competitive sailing. Known for its rich tradition and world-class venue, LYC has been a key player in the team racing circuit for over 25 years, participating in prestigious events such as the Baldwin Cup, the Kirby Cup, and the NYYC events. Notably, LYC finished second in the US Team Racing Championship in 2012, the second time the club hosted the event, and has been a consistent contributor to the national team racing scene.

This year, Larchmont Yacht Club is the host of the US Sailing Team Racing Championship for the George R. Hinman Trophy, for the third time in its history. The decision to host this prestigious event once again is driven by the club’s ongoing dedication to excellence in team racing. LYC’s fleet of 21 z420s, ten Ideal 18s, and nine Sonars ensures that they have the perfect platforms for training and competition, and the club’s robust team racing program has attracted sailors from across the country.

LYC’s rich history in hosting US Sailing Championships includes previous events in 2008 and 2012, and the club’s involvement in team racing extends beyond the adult level, with the 2024 USODA Team Racing Atlantic Coast Championship and the upcoming 2025 USODA National Team Racing Championship also planned. These initiatives reflect LYC’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of sailors and expanding the reach of team racing to junior competitors. Larchmont Yacht Club also has a history hosting US Sailing courses. LYC has hosted over 34 US Sailing courses, including Race Admin and small boat instructor courses.

For those considering hosting a major event like the Hinman Trophy, LYC offers this invaluable advice: “Pull out all the stops!” The key to a successful regatta goes beyond just great sailing—it’s about providing an exceptional experience both on and off the water. Attention to detail in every aspect of the event, from logistics to hospitality, will make all the difference in creating an unforgettable event. Hosting events like the Hinman Trophy is not just about competition; it’s about fostering a sense of community and connection among sailors.

Larchmont Yacht Club continues to lead the way in sports development, offering countless opportunities for all members—whether through racing, coaching, or simply day sailing. With the club’s leadership dedicated to expanding participation, especially among younger sailors, LYC remains a vibrant hub for both seasoned competitors and newcomers to the sport. As it hosts the Hinman Trophy once again, LYC proves itself as a cornerstone of American team racing and a home for sailors of all levels.
