Rose Wins French Olympic Week, Lyons and Edegran Qualify for Paris 2024

HYÈRES, FRANCE (27 April 2024) – Winds in the high 20s caused an early end to the 55th French Olympic Week. With no medal races, yesterday’s scores stand, and US Sailing Team’s Charlotte Rose is taking home her first World Cup win of her career in the ILCA 6. Rose sailed a consistent week with top five finishes in six of her nine races and will collect a gold medal at today’s closing ceremony. While she was not the victor of U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Sailing and will not compete at the Olympics this summer, she took the win this week in France against many women who will represent their countries in Marseille very soon.

“I definitely needed a little confidence boost following Trials and this is a really good kickoff for the next quad,” said Rose. “I’m really excited and it’s already right in line with what I’m planning for my LA28 preparation. I have some time off now to be able to create the foundation I want to create to hit the ground running next year. I’m just really happy and proud of this win.”

USST 49er team Andrew Mollerus and Ian MacDiarmid were also scheduled to sail their medal race today but will now keep their 6th overall.

The US will bring home a gold and silver medal and two new Olympic tickets from the closing ceremony of the Last Chance Regatta and French Olympic Week. In addition to Charlotte’s gold, Noah Lyons (USST Men’s iQFOiL) will collect his Last Chance Regatta silver medal and both Lyons and Markus Edegran (USST Men’s Kite) will collect their tickets to Paris 2024.

Day 6 of 7 Update

HYÈRES, FRANCE (26 April 2024) – The penultimate day of racing greeted competitors with dark, rainy skies and 10-15 knots of breeze. US Sailing Team’s Ford McCann took the water for the ILCA 7 Last Chance medal race but entered with too many points between himself and third to make Olympic country qualification possible.

McCann set up on the starting line below regatta leader Jeemin Ha (South Korea) and was faced with a challenging wave set right at go. Halfway up the first leg, he broke free and made progress up the middle-left of the course and moved into 7th, then had a brief stint in 5th on the first downwind run in good breeze. McCann rounded the leeward gate in 8th and remained as such for the rest of the race. The top three country rankings for Olympic tickets were given to South Korea, Estonia, and Malaysia, and El Salvador claimed the Emerging Nations berth.

This week delivered a wide range of conditions and I believe each of us had our time to shine,” said McCann, referencing training partners Marshall McCann and Leo Boucher. “After a slow start to the regatta, the pressure was on to keep in touch with the leaders and I was able to log a few great starts and land some top results. Unfortunately, a few uncontrollable moments and a few risky calls were enough to weigh down my scoreline. Looking back, I believe I’m at my top form and that with a little more experience and a couple more championships under my belt that I would have been right in the Olympic mix. We never took time or resources for granted in this short campaign, and I’m grateful for the wisdom shared from veterans of the sailing world as we look to Los Angeles.”

US Sailing Team athlete Charlotte Rose will enter tomorrow’s ILCA 6 medal race in first after scoring two top-three finishes in today’s races. Rose has been incredibly consistent this event, with only two finishes outside the top 10, one of which was her drop score. Rose will be joined in the medal race by Dutch sailor and gold, silver, and bronze medalist Marit Bouwmeester, two-time World Champion Emma Plasschaert from Belgium, and World Champion Mária Érdi, all currently sitting in 2nd, 4th, and 7th, respectively.

USST 49er athletes Andrew Mollerus and Ian MacDiarmid will also be moving on to the medal race tomorrow in 6th overall. After a tricky week of racing, Mollerus and MacDiarmid are only five points out from third place.

With Paris country qualification opportunities now closed, the United States will officially field a team of nine classes in Marseille this summer: Mixed 470, 49er, 49erFX, ILCA 6, Men’s and Women’s Kite, Men’s and Women’s iQFOiL, and Nacra 17. The complete Paris roster will be announced on May 12 with the completion of the Nacra 17 World Championship in La Grande Motte, France where the USA Nacra representatives will be decided.

Day 5 of 7 Update: Lyons, Edegran Punch Their Tickets to Paris 2024

HYÈRES, FRANCE (25 April 2024) – Day five of French Olympic Week brought chills and thrills for the US sailors. The Men’s iQFOiL and Men’s Formula Kite athletes secured USA country qualification amid a chilly, classic French Mistral wind with 15-20 knots out of the west.

The Men’s Formula Kite fleet opened the morning at the Last Chance Regatta with the Semifinal series. In Semifinal B, US Sailing Team athlete Markus Edegran won both of the races he needed to advance. By making the Finals, Edegran guaranteed he could do no worse than fourth, clinching country qualification by surpassing the minimum 5th place country rank needed to qualify.

“I’m just super proud to have the opportunity to represent my country at the highest level of the sport I love so much,” said Edegran. “To be a part of history in kiteboarding’s Olympic debut makes it even more special.”

Edegran went into the medal series final knowing he had qualification secured and finished fourth overall for the event.

After securing country qualification for Paris 2024 yesterday, US Sailing Team iQFOiL athlete Noah Lyons hit the water today guaranteed a medal in the Last Chance Regatta iQFOiL fleet. Although he led the fleet throughout the entire regatta, Lyons finished second in the winner-takes-all medal race, earning him a silver overall for the event.

“Winning Trials back in January was only step one, and getting the country qualified now is just surreal. I’m going to the Olympics, and I couldn’t be happier,” said Lyons. “I’m really proud of the progression I’ve made with the help of my coaches and teammates, and I’m honored to represent the USA this summer in Marseille.”

In the LCR ILCA 7 fleet, US Sailing Team athlete Ford McCann finished his day in 7th overall, two places higher than yesterday. Finishing inside the top-10, McCann will move on to tomorrow’s ILCA 7 medal race. Unfortunately, with only 20 points on the line tomorrow – 10 sailors with their medal race score doubled – it is mathematically impossible for McCann to achieve country qualification to Paris 2024.

In the Qualified Nations (QN) division, US Sailing Team athlete Charlotte Rose had another consistent day in the ILCA 6, scoring a 5th and 4th to finish the day in 4th overall. Rose’s American teammates Christina Sakellaris and Lilly Myers finished the day in 23th and 25th, respectively.

49er USST athletes Andrew Mollerus and Ian MacDiarmid continue to hold 4th place overall and are on track to qualify for Saturday’s medal race with three races scheduled tomorrow.

In the QN 470 class, US Sailing Team athletes Stu McNay and Lara Dallman Weiss took a UFD in the final race of the day, moving them to 11th overall.

The QN Women’s iQFOiL and Women’s Formula Kite fleets finished their racing today, with USST athlete and Paris 2024 selected athletes Dominique Stater finishing 15th overall in Women’s iQFOiL and Daniela Moroz finishing 15th in the Women’s Formula Kite.

Day 4 of 7 Update

HYÈRES, FRANCE (24 April 2024) – The iQFOiL fleets hit the water early for day four in pursuit of the event’s only marathon race. After a dynamic upwind rabbit start, both Last Chance and Qualified Nations fleets set out for the hour-long race in 13 knots of breeze.

Though fleet leader and US Sailing Team athlete Noah Lyons took 16th in the marathon race, his consistent racing all event – with wins in all but one race – meant that the marathon’s double-counted 16th finish went straight to his three allotted drop scores. After a break, the fleet sailed two traditional upwind course races, with Noah finishing his penultimate day of competition with a race withdraw that counted as his third drop and a 2nd place to round out the day. Never leaving 1st overall this week, Lyons will advance straight to tomorrow’s finals and is therefore guaranteed a medal at the Last Chance Regatta, officially securing his ticket to the Paris Olympics with one day of racing to spare.

Markus Edegran, USST and Paris 2024 selected Men’s Kite athlete, ended his qualifying series racing in fifth overall. He will sail in tomorrow’s semifinals, where he will need two race wins to advance to finals. To lock in his spot in Marseille this summer, Edegran will need to finish as the 5th or higher country ranking overall.

In the ILCA 7 fleet, USST’s Ford McCann ended his day with a third-place finish, putting him in ninth overall with one more day of racing before the top ten advance to Friday’s medal race. Ford’s brother Marshall is following by two places in 11th, and USA’s Leo Boucher sits in 19th. For Ford to secure a ticket to Paris, any American must finish as a top three country ranking at the end of Friday’s racing.

In the Qualified Nations division, standout performances include USST athlete Charlotte Roses’s 1st and 2nd place finishes, launching her up the scoreboard ten places to 4th overall. USST 49er team Andrew Mollerus and Ian MacDiarmid moved up to 5th overall from 7th and have their sights set on Saturday’s medal race. Finally, Paris 2024 Nominees and USST athletes Stu McNay OLY and Lara Dallman-Weiss OLY moved into 9th overall from 14th with two fourth place finishes. McNay and Dallman-Weiss are also eyeing qualification for the Mixed 470 medal race on Saturday with a top ten finish or higher at the end of Friday’s racing.

Day 3 of 7 Update

HYÈRES, FRANCE (23 April 2024) – It was another wacky day on the water at French Olympic Week, with storms disrupting weather patterns and creating a moderate, tricky breeze for competitors. That didn’t faze US Sailing Team athlete Noah Lyons, who continued his domination over the Last Chance Regatta iQFOiL fleet. Lyons won all five of today’s slalom races and will once again enter tomorrow’s racing wearing the yellow jersey, with an 18-point lead over second place Lithuania.

Paris 2024 selected athlete Ford McCann is inching closer to country qualification in the ILCA 7 fleet, moving up five places to 7th with a fourth-place finish in today’s only race. Markus Edegran had a consistent day in the Men’s Formula Kite fleet, scoring a 5, 7, 5. This moves him up to 5th overall and 4th country ranking with two days of racing left. Edegran must finish as one of the top five countries in order to secure his place at Paris 2024.

In the Qualified Nations Regatta, the ILCA 6 women were able to get in their first races of the series. American Christina Sakellaris is in 12th, followed by US Sailing Team athlete Charlotte Rose in 15th and American Lilly Myers in 27th.

Day 2 of 7 Update

HYÈRES, FRANCE (22 April 2024) – The breeze swung around the compass today, creating challenges for sailors and race committee alike. While sailable, the shifting winds prevented race officials from fully executing the day’s planned schedule.

US Sailing Team athlete Noah Lyons continued to excel in the iQFOiL fleet’s slalom racing, scoring a third in the day’s only race. Lyons will enter day three with a six-point lead, once again wearing the yellow jersey as the fleet’s leader.

In the Last Chance Regatta Men’s Formula Kite class, Marcus Edegran scored a 6, 8, and 9 in today’s shifty breeze and sits in 6th overall, 5th country. Edegran must finish as one of the top five countries in order to secure his place at Paris 2024.

Paris 2024 selected athlete Ford McCann bounced back from a black flag start (BFD) with a third in the final race of the day. McCann currently sits in 12th overall and the 12th country in the standings. His training partners Leo Boucher and Marshall McCann are moving up the scoreboard, finishing the day in 17th and 19th overall, respectively.

Day 1 of 7 Update

HYÈRES, FRANCE (21 April 2024) – With the first official day of racing on the books, the race is ON for the US to qualify as a country in the three remaining classes needed to round out a full 10-class Olympic Team: Men’s iQFOiL, Men’s Formula Kite, and ILCA 7. Men’s iQFOiL, Men’s Formula Kite, and ILCA 7. Athletes began the day postponed due to light winds but were able to get out on the Mediterranean early in the afternoon in a building westerly. The breeze was between 6-10 knots.

Men’s iQFOiL athlete Noah Lyons thrived in the light air conditions, winning all three of the day’s slalom races. “I’m feeling good after today,” said Lyons. “It’s a marathon, not a sprint so I’m not getting ahead of myself.” If Lyons finishes as one of the top five nations at the end of the regatta, he will complete the second part of his selection process by qualifying the USA and officially secure his spot at the Paris Olympics.

In the Last Chance Regatta Men’s Formula Kite fleet, Markus Edegran is currently in 5th overall and the fourth country in the standings. Edegran finished the day strong with a second-place finish in Race 5. Similar to Lyons, he must finish as one of the top five countries in order to officially secure his place at Paris 2024.

Paris 2024 nominated athlete Ford McCann is currently the top American in 10th place, followed by teammates Leo Boucher in 19th and Marshall McCann in 47th. To secure the US ILCA 7 spot at the Olympic Games, any American must finish as a top three country at the end of the week. After Day 1, the US currently stands as the ninth nation overall.

All USA athletes will be on the water tomorrow with the start of the Qualified Nations regatta for most classes, and the fight will continue for those in the Last Chance Regatta.

The Last Chance Regatta will take place in Hyères, France as a part of French Olympic Week, with racing April 21-27. 50 spots are up for grabs across 10 Olympic sailing classes, and the United States is working to qualify as a country in the three remaining classes needed to round out a full Olympic Team: Men’s iQFOiL, Men’s Formula Kite, and ILCA 7. Athlete selection was completed in Miami earlier this year at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Sailing, where Noah Lyons, Markus Edegran, and Ford McCann were selected, respectively. To secure their spot at Paris 2024, any American must finish as a top three country in the ILCA 7, and as a top five country in the Men’s Formula Kite and Men’s iQFOiL to complete country qualification for their class.

French Olympic Week will also host a separate, Qualified Nations regatta for the countries already qualified for Paris 2024. Competing for extra sparring practice are nine US Sailing Team athletes and two additional American representatives. Since these athletes are racing in classes that have already secured country qualification, their participation is valuable training in the lead up to the Games or for the start of their campaign for LA 2028.
