Five-Time Olympian Stu McNay Talks to 5th Graders About his Journey

Stu McNay, a five-time Olympian who competed in the 2024 Summer Games in Marseille, France, recently spoke to a group of 5th-grade students in Rhode Island about his journey from a kid who loved sports to an Olympic competitor.

McNay shared how his interest in sports led him to sailing. He began in an Opti, a small boat for beginners, and quickly fell in love with the sport. Over time, his passion grew, and he made his way as a coach and pro-sailor, and ultimately to the Olympics, competing five times for the United States.

He talked about the years of training and dedication that have been essential to his career. The students were especially curious about the Olympics; what it’s like to compete at that level and what he’s learned from the experience.

McNay encouraged the students to remember that early experiences, whether in sailing or any other activity, can set the stage for bigger opportunities later on – a reminder that half the battle is showing kids what’s possible. Stu is living proof that with passion and hard work, childhood interests can lead to extraordinary achievements.
