Nestled along the pristine shores of Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor, in Lihue, HI, the Kauai Sailing Association (KSA) is more than just a sailing program — it’s a gateway to life-changing experiences rooted in Kauai’s rich marine culture and traditions. By offering accessible programming, hands-on education, and a steadfast commitment to inclusivity, KSA continues to empower individuals of all ages and backgrounds to connect with the ocean.
Breaking Down Barriers to the Water
Kauai Sailing Association is dedicated to making sailing accessible to everyone, regardless of financial circumstance. Through need-based youth scholarships, discounted community events like Sailing Days, and partnerships with local schools and nonprofits, KSA removes barriers that often limit participation in water-based activities. These initiatives ensure that every member of the community, from the shores of Keiki to Kupuna, can experience the joy and lessons that come from time on the water.
“Our program isn’t just about sailing; it’s about building confidence, fostering a deep respect for the ocean, and creating opportunities for all members of our community to learn and grow together,” said Cara Brosius, Board Member of Kauai Sailing Crew. “We are committed to making our programs accessible and welcoming to everyone, regardless of background or experience.”
Building an Inclusive Sailing Community
KSA takes intentional steps to ensure its programs are inclusive, welcoming, and impactful for all members of the community. Initiatives include:
- Girls in Sailing: A program empowering girls through mentorship, workshops, and scholarships.
- Outreach to Underserved Communities: Partnerships with local schools and nonprofits to serve Native Hawaiian, low-income, and underrepresented youth.
- Adaptive Sailing: Developing programs and acquiring equipment to make sailing accessible for individuals with disabilities.
Through Family Sailing Days, workshops, and mentorship opportunities, KSA fosters an environment where individuals of all ages and abilities can learn, grow, and feel connected to both the water and their community.
A Diverse Fleet and Facilities with a View
KSA operates out of a two-story, open-air facility at Nawiliwili Harbor, featuring a secure dinghy shed, a flexible instructional space overlooking the water, and a dedicated dock for launching and retrieving vessels. This ideal location allows participants to seamlessly transition between classroom learning and on-the-water practice.
To support sailors of all levels, KSA boasts a versatile fleet of boats, including:
- Olsen 30
- Santa Cruz 33
- Lasers
- 420s
- Toppers
- O’pen Skiffs
- El Toros
These boats offer a range of experiences, ensuring that beginners build confidence in smaller vessels while advanced sailors hone their skills on larger platforms.
Connecting Education, Culture, and Conservation
KSA fosters skills that go beyond the boat. Participants explore marine ecosystems, engage with principles of physics and engineering, and take part in harbor cleanups to help preserve Kauai’s natural beauty.
In addition, cultural connection plays a key role in KSA’s mission. Hawaiian traditions and values are woven into the curriculum, led in part by instructors with deep ties to the local culture, including fluency in the Hawaiian language. This approach highlights the historical significance of the ocean and ensures participants develop a profound respect for the water and its role in the island’s heritage.
Measuring Impact and Looking Ahead
KSA evaluates its success through community feedback, participant stories, and measurable increases in program engagement. By tracking retention rates, gathering input from instructors, and building strong partnerships, KSA continually strives to improve and expand its offerings.
“At KSA, our goals for the future include increasing scholarships for low-income families, expanding adaptive sailing opportunities, and further strengthening ties with underrepresented communities,” said Brosius. “Additionally, KSA plans to deepen its cultural programming and continue integrating the Hawaiian language into its curriculum, ensuring both locals and visitors can learn and grow from the island’s rich traditions.”
