Building a Stronger Future for US Sailing by Charlie Enright

2025 was a year of transition—both for US Sailing and for me personally. When I accepted the role of CEO, it was with the intention of giving back to a sport that has given me so much. I stepped into the position with eyes wide open, yet as with any meaningful change, there were lessons and realities that only become clear once the work began.

As expected, there was an initial period of optimism and momentum. That was followed by a moment of clear-eyed realization, when it became evident that meaningful progress would require focus, urgency, and collective effort. At that point, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work—and we did make progress. While we came a long way in 2025, we also acknowledge that there is still important work ahead: continuing to build trust, rebuilding key relationships, creating efficiencies and positioning the organization to better serve our community.

Over the past year, US Sailing underwent significant change while accomplishing a great deal in the process. We reduced the size of the organization, welcomed a new Chief Financial Officer, Director of Olympic Sailing, and Communications Director, and published our 2026–2028 Strategic Plan. We reduced our office footprint at Roger Williams University, modernized our internal benefits package, cut costs across the organization, and raised sufficient philanthropic support to stabilize our financial foundation. To everyone who contributed to these efforts, we extend our sincere thanks. Your support and belief in our direction have been deeply appreciated.

Change takes time, but we are well on our way. The impact of these efforts—and the long-term strengthening of the organization—will be felt over the coming years. Looking ahead, our priorities include continuing to improve financial processes; simplifying our organizational structure by addressing the complexity of operating two entities (US Sailing Association and US Sailing Foundation); undertaking an internal reorganization; a new website when resources allow; ensuring we are financially prepared to support Team USA during our upcoming home Olympics without placing undue strain on the organization; and enhancing the membership experience through a modern CRM that integrates membership with certification, accreditation, championships, rating certificates, philanthropy, and finance.

These are ambitious goals, but they are achievable with continued engagement and support from the sailing community. Progress will take time, but the direction is clear and our mission to support members and the sport of sailing remains the same.

I am grateful for the dedicated team of individuals working every day on behalf of this organization and the sport we all care deeply about.

I hope you had a happy and healthy holiday season, and I look forward to seeing you on the water in 2026.
