U.S. Radial Athletes Take on Worlds

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SAKAIMINATO CITY, Japan (July 18, 2019) – On Friday, July 19, racing at the 2019 Laser Radial World Championships will begin in Sakaiminato City, Japan. At this year’s edition of the event, 111 competitors representing 49 countries, will be vying for the title of 2019 World Champion.

Six athletes will be sailing under the American flag. Recently, US Sailing Team athletes, Paige Railey (Clearwater, Fla.) and Erika Reineke (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), took 8th and 9th place, respectively, at the 2019 Laser Senior European Championships. Many of the athletes that competed at that event will also be racing at the World Championship.

Team USA athlete, Charlotte Rose (Houston, Texas) will also be competing at the 2019 World Championships. Later this summer, Rose will be representing the United States at the 2019 Pan-American Games, while Railey and Reineke are training for the Ready Steady Tokyo, Sailing Olympic Test Event.

In addition to competing for the title, this event will mark the beginning of the 2019 U.S. Sailing Olympic Trials for U.S. Laser Radial sailors. Under US Sailing’s qualification system, athletes may earn selection as early as next month or as late as spring of 2020. In either case, the results from the 2019 World Championships will set the stage for Olympic Selection.

A total of 12 races are scheduled for the 2019 Laser Radial World Championships. Racing will begin on Friday, July 19 and conclude on Wednesday, July 24.
