Why do you want to be a member of US Sailing’s Board of Directors?
I have been a member of US Sailing for many years, but it was not until a few years ago when US Sailing
visited New Orleans for its outreach and board meeting that I really began to explore and understand the
mission of US Sailing.
Since that time, I have met many US Sailing leaders and have actively served on the Finance and
Compensation Committees over the last year. That participation has provided great insight about how US
Sailing operates, what and how it contributes to the sport of sailing, and its role as the National Governing
Body for sailing.
One of my personal goals is to broadly support and encourage the sport of sailing, on and off the water;
US Sailing is a great organization to provide that support.
How can community sailing centers, yacht clubs and other sailing organizations collaborate
with each other more on key initiatives to grow sailing?
The Key to getting more people involved in sailing is to increase the participation and development of
coaches so they can introduce, teach and train sailors.
A common challenge among all sailing organizations is attracting, training and certifying coaches.
US Sailing can be a vital partner by promoting, training, certifying and recognizing future coaches.
How can these organizations and other sailing industries integrate with their local communities
to provide more awareness for prospective new sailors?
Community Sailing Centers are great at expanding sailing in their local communities and getting more
people on the water and helping to create a new group of lifelong sailors.
Yacht Clubs, community sailing centers and US Sailing can work together through STEM classes, maritime
2
industry awareness, training and certifying coaches.
What can US Sailing do to help facilitate these partnerships?
US Sailing can use its reach to communicate and explain the benefits of groups working together to
promote sailing and provide greater access to the water.
The regional meetings and listening sessions are an effective way to bring sailors together to talk and
identify opportunities to collaborate. Many great ideas and partnerships have come out of these meetings.
How have US Sailing’s programs and services impacted your overall sailing experience?
One of the key groups at US Sailing is the Race Administration group. Several years ago, I became active in
race management by serving on race committee. Since that time, I have attended numerous US Sailing
race committee training sessions, where skilled PROs, trained and certified by US Sailing, shared insight
and provided inspiration.
Is it important for sailors to be members of US Sailing?
Yes, US Sailing plays a key role in every aspect of sailing. Many sailors do not know that US Sailing’s role
as the National Governing Body for the sport of sailing is more than supporting our Olympic efforts. US
Sailing is the backbone of our sport and influences every aspect of sailing.

I believe I can use my professional financial, management and leadership experience to help move US
Sailing forward.
As I travel around the country to sail, cruise, participate in race committee, and other water-based
activities, I am able to interact with and hear sailors’ thoughts about US Sailing, how we can improve our
sport, and spread the word on what US Sailing is already doing to accomplish that.
