RYE, N.Y. (June 19, 2014) – Thursday’s conditions on Western Long Island Sound presented new challenges for the 41 competing teams racing at the U.S. Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship. Teams are racing for the Ida Lewis Trophy this week at this US Sailing National Championship hosted by the American Yacht Club in Rye, N.Y.
Light winds early this afternoon proved to be insufficient, forcing a postponement to the start of Day 2. Breezes picked up in the afternoon and the race committee managed to pull off three races in 6 to 8 knots. The Club 420 fleet has posted seven races through two days. Two to three races are planned for Friday’s grand finale.
It was a big day on the water for Lucy and Sally Wilmot (Orinda, Calif.) who won Race 7 to take a one point lead into Friday. They posted a 2-5-1 scoring line today. Wednesday’s leaders, Alie and Liza Toppa (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), remain legitimate contenders for the championship. They placed -3-4 this afternoon. The team of the day goes to Cassie Obel (Marina del Rey, Calif.) and Annika Garrett (Culver City, Calif.), who won Races 5 and 6. Full Standings
