Basic Keelboat Instructor

What to Expect

This Three-day Instructor Certification Course is an extremely intensive EVALUATION of your ability to teach sailing to the US Sailing Keelboat Certification System Standard. This standard is the most rigorous in the country and requires practice, study, and preparation by even the most gifted and experienced professional instructors. We are evaluating in great detail everything about your teaching and sailing knowledge, skills and ability. There is little formal training, education or time for practice. Active sailing instructors often assume their everyday instructor work will be sufficient preparation for them to perform well in these clinics. Due to the fact that students do much more sailing than instructors do in a sailing course, the instructors are often rustier than they might think. This situation may lead to difficulty, frustration, and failure.

As soon as possible and well before attending this course, please follow this advice:

  • Speak at length with a recent graduate of the course about their experiences.
  • Study and learn all of the written material sent to you in advance.
  • Get out and practice the sailing skills you will be asked to perform.
  • Be sure to practice your classroom presentation skills (preferably with a trusted colleague to
receive good feedback). It is much easier to demonstrate your teaching skills in front of your peers
if you have had some recent practice.
  • Speak with a US Sailing instructor who knows your skills. Go sailing with them and get their advice on any needed areas of refinement or improvement you may have. Then take the time to practice before arriving at the clinic. If you do not have a colleague with instructor certification, consider visiting a US Sailing school and purchase a short sailing session with a certified
