Judge Protest Day

Thank you for your interest in a Judge Protest Day.

Protest Day is intended for certified judges who wish to refine their hearing procedure, as well as for candidates for judge certification who have some experience with hearings. Protest Day is not suitable for those with little or no experience with hearings.

Certified judges will receive 80 Continuing Education Units (or 10 credits per hour) as well as hearing credit. Candidates for certification may count one hearing toward certification as a Club Judge. References from the lead instructor will also be provided on request.

The seminar covers organizing and running protest and redress hearings and arbitration, including:

  • organizing your team
  • conducting efficient hearings
  • taking testimony from parties and witnesses
  • determining facts found
  • writing conclusions and decisions using standard recommended language

Participants will rotate through multiple mock hearings and will be assigned roles of panel chair, panel member, arbitrator, protestor and protestee.

Please note the session times (including time zone) and dates – while in-person events typically take place in one session, online offerings will be divided into multiple Zoom sessions.

The Judge Protest Day events are free of charge for Certified Judges ONLY. A $25 administrative fee to US Sailing will be charged to uncertified members. An additional amount may be added by the organizer to cover expenses such as food or materials.

Refund Policy

  • Fewer than 5 days before seminar – full credit toward a future seminar
  • No-shows – sorry, we cannot refund seminar fees
