Country Selection

There are far more countries competing in Olympic-class boats than there are available spots at the Olympic Games. Therefore, athletes must first secure a berth for the United States in their chosen class before they are eligible to qualify as individuals to Team USA. The table below outlines the events at which each class can qualify the U.S. as a country for representation in Tokyo.

Athlete Selection

Only one boat per class, per country, is eligible to compete at the Olympic Games. Upon approval from the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), the selected athletes will be named to the 2020 U.S. Olympic Sailing Team and will compete in the 2020 Olympic regatta.

US Sailing is responsible for selecting and supporting the members of Team USA, many or all of whom will be drawn from the roster of the US Sailing Team, the annually-selected national team that competes at events around the world throughout the four-year Olympic cycle.

Athletes seeking to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Sailing Team will have the opportunity to do so at major international events in three phases: Early Selection, Middle Selection, and Late Selection. If athletes are not selected in either of the first two phases, they will still have the opportunity to qualify in a later phase.

The table below displays each athlete/team’s finishing position in the Trial events. If an athlete/team has earned selection, an American flag will appear in the same row as their name(s).

All selection procedures have been reviewed and approved by the USOPC. For additional details about the selection procedures for the 2020 Olympic Sailing Team, refer to the documents below.
