The best kept secret of youth sailing is team racing. The boat handling skills, rules knowledge, and spirited competitiveness that are uniquely found in this facet of the sport challenge us and makes team racing very dynamic – and fun. Short-course sailing is also a great change from traditional buoy fleet racing that adds extra excitement to team racing. Through team racing and the related skills, you can become a better fleet racer.
After pausing for most of 2020, youth racing is roaring back to life in 2021. As the fog clears and sailors get back out on the racecourse this season, there are many great events to choose from.
On Thursday, June 10, World Sailing was informed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that the IOC Executive Board approved Men’s and Women’s Kiteboarding (Formula Kite) for the Paris 2024 Olympic Sailing Competition. The Men’s and Women’s Kiteboarding Events will replace the Mixed Kiteboarding and Mixed Offshore Events that were previously selected by members of World Sailing. It was a mad dash to the finish in champagne conditions on Sunday at the 2021 West Marine US Open Sailing Series – San Diego. Top athletes competing in the ILCA 7 (Laser), ILCA 6 (Laser Radial), ILCA 4 (Laser 4.7), Finn, and 29er events this week raced over two days this weekend at the launch for the West Coast tour of the 2021 West Marine US Open Sailing Series.

I write to you today with incredible excitement, having just joined US Sailing as its new Chief Executive Officer. Given your important place in the sailing community, I wanted to connect initially to introduce myself in this manner for now at the very start of my time with US Sailing.
US Sailing launched the debut of the West Marine US Open Sailing Series at the beginning of the year with host yacht clubs in Florida including three events in Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Clearwater that took place January and February. The second half of the 2021 West Marine US Open Sailing Series in California gets underway this summer at major sailing venues including San Diego, Long Beach, and San Francisco. Registration is now open for San Diego and Long Beach.
