Ian MacDiarmid has been ripping across the water on fast sailboats since he was four years old. Born in San Diego, California, and raised in South Florida, Ian’s sailing career has been defined by innovative skills progression and breakthrough achievement at the national, continental, and international levels. Ian was a member of the United States Opti National Team and was selected to represent the U.S. in seven international championships by the age of 13, including two consecutive IODA European Championships.

An early adopter of innovative and high-speed skiff-style sailing, Ian had great success in the International 29er class, highlighted by a win at the 2016 International Orange Bowl Regatta and 2nd place finishes at the 2015 29er US Nationals and North American Championship. He has trained and competed in various foiling multihull fleets including the Oracle Foiling Phantoms, A Cats, and the Red Bull Foiling Generation. In his transition into the Olympic 49er, Ian found immediate success. He was the 2016 Olympic 49er US National Champion and the top American 49er in the 2017 Miami World Cup, earning a spot on the US Sailing Team. He and his helm, Andrew Mollerus, were the top Americans at the 2019 Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia Regatta, earning the right to represent Team USA at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, and the Tokyo Olympic Test Event in August 2019. Narrowly missing qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Games, Ian and Andrew now are focused on campaigning for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
