Carmen Cowles

Carmen Cowles is the Team Cowles skipper, identified by her red hat. Born and raised in Larchmont, New York, she is two minutes older than her twin sister, Emma. At age nine, Carmen started sailing the Optimist dinghy at Larchmont Yacht Club, hoping at first to simply become comfortable on the water. However, Carmen quickly took to racing and after a few years of sailing in the Junior Sailing Association (JSA) of Long Island Sound, committed to training year-round with the LISOT Sailing Team, a training program designed for motivated Opti, i420, C420, Laser, and Radial sailors. After aging out of the Opti in 2015, Carmen joined forces with her sister Emma and began training in the i420 under the guidance of LISOT head coach, Steve Keen, who continues to coach the duo today in the 470.

Carmen has a bubbly personality and loves learning. As the demands of her sailing success grow, she recognizes how much the sport has given her in return. Sailing has taught her that organization is key, especially as toolboxes get bigger and heavier and what used to be missing a day of school has turned into missing a week. Learning how to teach herself, either a lesson in school or a challenge on the racecourse, has made her realize how much she loves problem solving. After a two-year deferment to focus on her Tokyo Games campaign, Carmen plans to attend Yale University in the fall of 2021 to study engineering and economics.
